#Metaware vs Watcom?

I plunked down the cash for the Metaware / PharLap developer's system for IPAS development. Now I'm questioning my choice… Could I have spent a lot less money on the Watcom system? If I bought Watcom, I'd still need to buy the PharLap development system, right, which would mean I'd still spend roughly the same amount on software? What are some of the differences between the Metaware and Watcom routes for IPAS development? PharLap's royalties are a bite, while Watcom includes a royalty-free DOS extender.

I think since the 3DS kernel is actually providing the Pharlap support, you shouldn't have to pay royalities on IPAS applications. Right Gary?

Yes, that's true for IPAS routines, but not for anything else I might create with the compiler.

A friend of mine just bought the Watcom kit, and I think he mentioned the Phar Lap support was included. It seems like a more verasatile package, especially considering the price difference, though I don't know enough about programming to give any sort of qualified answer. John Tissavary (La Luan cie)

The quality of debugging support in the Metaware system is superior to the Watcom system. Once Gus Grubba returns from his vacation, I'm sure that he'll be happy to answer specific questions comparing the two of them. – G

Thanks for the info. I'll be looking forward to more of Gus's clear explanations. Seems he's about the only programmer out there I can understand. By the way, it was very nice to meet you at SIGGRAPH, and I enjoyed the 3D Studio party very much. John Tissavary (La Luna cie)

Gus and the Yosties (? 🙂 use a two-monitor setup for debugging? Or do you use serial port for remote output, or for a remote debugger?
