#Configuring A System
7 messages in this thread
I will be configuring six systems for 3D Studio. All comments would be
appreciated about memory managers, amount of ram, hard disk space, rendering
farms, etc. I see some people talk about Pharlap, is it necessary. What is the
"Hottest" setup?
Phar Lap is not only necessary, it is an integral part of 3D Studio.
There is no need to modify Phar Lap to any great extent, other than
some possible minor tweaks done with a utility that is explained in
the installation and performance guide.
Lots of RAM, Qemm386, lots of disk space, hi-res VGA card, fastest
reliable CPU available on as many machines as possible, fastest bus
setup available, largest monitor available, you get the picture. More
is better in the world of 3D Studio. And a recording setup is
another story (i.e. tape format, frame buffer card resolution,
controller/software, etc…).

To add to John's list, Network. For several machines, that might be assumed,
but I don't like to assume<g>. With the new r3 networking features, _not_
having a network is like throwing money out the window.

Absolutely true about the network. And yes, it was implied, though spending a
gagillion hours trying to make a network work a couple of weeks ago had me
questioning the whole concept of computers <g>. Try getting a PC to talk to a
network of SGI's via a network of Macs sometime (a good question here would be
"WHY?"<g>).

Oh man, John… there are a whole LOT of things that make me question the worth
of computers vs my sanity!<g>
Dave
NO DOUBT. Computer— Sanity — oxymoron <g>.

Hi David!
You sound quite familiar with networks and 3DS. How do you set up your 3ds
paths?? Do you put ALL your maps, meshes, etc. on the server and 3DS on the
local hard drives?
Thanks,
