I am interested in purchasing a removable hard drive, but don't know which one
to buy. What are most of the service bureua using??? Evenually I would like
send my animations to removable hard disk for transport to video experts.

coast, and want to try a get 3d Studio more popular on the north east coast.

Just letting you know that you have some kindred spirits here in New
Jersey. I work at The Hillier Group in Princeton and have a plan
currently going through my firm's approval process for the creation
of an Image Lab. Naturally, I have selected 3DS as the
rendering/animation software to base this part of the lab's
operation. I just got a call this morning from Synergis that
informed me that tonight's 3DS user group meeting has been postponed
to February due to the ice and snow last night. Its a good group and
I hope you'll join us. We've only had one meeting so far so you'll
be getting in on the ground floor.
As far as which removeable drive, the local print houses up here
favor the Syquest drives as Greg P. mentions but you may simply find
using your modem to upload files to the print house's bulletin board
may be easier. Of course as file size increases this option may
become impractical.

Our average file size for a print is well over 15 megs, and some have gone over
30! No modems for printed files here! <g>

I know that file size can be rediculously large for print but I have
had fine results printing 1280 x 960 .tif files on a Kodak dye-sub
printer for proofs. These .tif files usually zip down to around 1.3
Megs. For that I'd send it via modem. If I get this Image Lab under
way I'll be looking to buy a dye-sub printer for in-house proofs. Do
you have one? I haven't seen anything but the Kodak Colorease so I
was wondering if any other mfgr's quality is comparable. I will
probably demo the Tektronix first to compare but I don't know if
there are others worth looking at. For finished architectural print
work what is the preferred printer/plotter? IRIS? If you have other
print methods that work well for architectural stuff I'd love to hear
about them.

We have a Mitsubishi 300dpi dye sub in house. Absolutely love it! 8-1/2×11 or
8-1/2×14. A real work horse, never had a problem with it.

Its a really great machine. What's probably the best news about this
printer for 3DS'ers is that it doesn't require PostScript. With the
DOS and Windows drivers .. you can dump raster info directly to the
machine. Because of this, its the fastest printer of its kind that I
know of. I remember timing a 3k file (300 dpi at 8.5×11) at under 5
min for the finished output from the word "go" .. pretty impressive.

Yes, that's a big advantage. Pure DOS drivers, we run Targa files straight
into it 99% of the time, 2,700 x 2,400 resolution, beautiful output!

I would take the advice to call the people you expect to exchange
files with and descide that way.
Syquests are much more prevailant in print operations (traditional
MAC arena) .. Bernoullis in animation recording (DOS arena).

Check your local SB's, best to match what they have if you want to deal with
them. I personally like Syquest but everybody has bernouli arround here.
