What is a bloody SPECMark?
knowbody I know knows.
I'm kind of fuzzy on it but from what I can understand, a SPECMark is
a measurement of computing power. The old VAX computers were 1
SpecMark. An Amiga is approx 9-10 SPECMarks (I think), An SGI Indigo
is about 70 and a Screamer is 360! About 5 times the computing power
of an Indigo. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong…
The SPECmark benchmark is a series of 10 or so benchmarks. It shows
various performance issues (floating point, integer, etc) and
combined show the overall rating of the machine. A machine might
have really awesome integer ops, but have really bad floating point,
and the benchmark would show that.
Problem is, the original intention of the SPECmark benchmark's
creators is to have all the categories listed so people know how the
machine does over all. Quoting one number doesn't say anything. I
mean, is that 360 figure for floating point operations, or what? I
don't think NewTek's literature says anything about that. …But
then, either does anyone else's these days.
