Anyone have recommendations as to fax hdwr/sftwr?
I just got the Supra 14.4 Fax/Modem bundle for the Amiga for around $299.
The latest revision of their FAX software (2.341) is very nice under WB
2.x or higher. And the modem works just fine with the older FAX & modem
software on my 486 also.

I did just find a bug in the GPFax software today:
It seems to lock up when I try to print a second page of a multi-page fax.
The abort button doesn't work, it just sits there. (At least the rest of
the system still runs, only the Fax software hangs.)

I've never experienced that problem at all. All of my multi-page faxes
print fine. Is the problem replicable? If so, I suggest you contact the
authors. It is either a problem with GPFax or an interaction problem. I
would suspect the latter, but I put no money on it.

I doubt it's the fax software, though it could be. (I've got a star
NX-1000 color printer, and am using the Star9Plus print driver. It seems a
little flakey in and of itself.)
Anyway, I just got their 2.342 patch, so maybe this will fix it.

I just upgraded to 2.342 as well. The Readme file says the upgrade from
2.341 to 2.342 was simply to eliminate a bug in printing. I can't remember
the exact details, and I have now deleted the relevant directory, but I
think it mentioned something about multiple pages.

I was just wondering, are you using the old 5.05 ROMs ?? (thats the 16.8K
connect ones) or have you upgraded to the latest ROM the 6.01c ROM (which
is the one I use).
The reason I ask is that There is major problems with GPfax with the 6
Roms (this includes ANY version of the 6 ROM), what happens is that Gpfax
screws up the End of File Padding, given an error, and thus stopping the
transimission of faxes.
I've contacted GPsoftware a couple of times now with regards to them
fixing this problem, and although I received a fax back from them, I was
not statisfied with their response, as they made no hint of any effort to
fixing the problem – puting all the blame on the ROM. Thing is from what I
know they still don't have the 6 ROM's so how can they fix it !
Anyway this is kind of a warning to those whom have Zyxels with the
version 6 ROM's, check with Gpsoftware first to make sure they have fixed
this problem before purchasing.

Correction! The latest ROM is 6.01p, and it's been available on the ZyXEL
Support BBS for awhile. There are actually newer versions in use also,
privately for testing. On FidoNet's ZyXEL echo it is being said that a new
version will be officially released in a matter of weeks.
Thanks. I did the upgrade myself, and I saw that it was to fix the
specific problem I was having. Haven't checked yet, ubt it should work
just fine now.

I missed some of this thread. Does this apply to just the sftwr
GPFax or does it include the hdwr (Supra) too?
Secondly, are the Zoom products worth looking at. They've recently
reduced their pricing.
And lastly, what config would be recommended for home/small business
use?

Someone asked about what fax/modem they should get, and I recommended the
Supra Fax Bundle.
The conversation then drifted onto a problem I had with GPFax. It has been
fixed in their latest version (v2.342).
I've never tried the Zoom product, but the Supra Fax is not bad. (You can
get softwatare for other platforms direct from Supra, and it works with
BtiFax under Windows.

Hayes has just released a new modem. It is a 14.4 FAX/DATA modem. Price is
around $269 and it handles both upto the 14.4 baud rates.
I'd imagine it should be available for less if you look around.
I guess 14.4K FAX is only available between two connected computers with same
device. I haven't heard of any FAX machines that handle that rate.
Now our big question is will the SupraFAX software work with it? It is suppose
to be compliant with the new FAX standards for modems. I'm tempted to get one.
I've been using an Hayes Ultra 9600 for sometime now (borrowed) and I like it,
nice quality device.

PMFJI…….. have you run into compatability problems with some
some Amiga sftwr (fax/comm) and modems? ie…… a person should buy a
modem that is configured for their platform. / Or can you use any modem,
provided you have sftwr that runs on the platform of choice?

Sending faxes via v.17 (14.4) is quite commons nowadays. The software
from Dr. Perry (GPFax) is almost T.30 compliant and he has versions for
both classic class 2 (TR29) and class 1 (EIA578) modems. I have not heard
that he has done support for 2.0, but then again, there is only two modems
that support it to date. As for v.17 faxing, many stand alone fax
nachines support it and will soon be support v.17terbo as well. I don't
think the software (GPFax) support the short and long modes of v.17 and
must be forcing 9600 transmissions. I have not yet had a chance to stick
it on a Feline or HP protocol analyzer, but I am assuming that the
software limits the modem environment to 9600. From what I can tell, the
only difference between the Supra specific and generic versions is that
the Supra version adds support for Silent Answer. I use the generic
versions fine with a Supra as well as a GVC, USR, and Intel modem.

Actually, 14.4k fax transmission rate is a standard, and most new
stand-alone fax machines handle it. I have connected at this rate with a
variety of machines, and other-branded faxmodems. I have the Supra, BTW.

Thanks Erik. I looked into goin' with Zoom or USR, but when you add in
gett'n sftwr to run on the Amiga and dwnl'd Afax + Reg fee, it rounds out
to $300. Might as well get the Supra, 'cept the few mail order houses I
called, said Supra is not shipp'n right now. Only alternative is to get a
slower (2400) setup…..

I use a Supra V32bis/FAX in combination with GPFax software, works well
for me.
