#Is Amiga what I need?

I've no doubt that Macs and PCs are catching up in that department
(conversion to NTSC) but it's still less straightforward and more
expensive. E.g., GVP's GLock for the Amiga ($399 for a unit that also
handles sound) is now available in a Windows version for PCs — at
least twice as expensive and no sound capability.
If you are hinting at non-linear digital editing, that's available
(or will be shortly) on all platforms. But that's really only a
solution for high-end purposes, since it takes such huge gobs of RAM
and hard storage. In short, for typical home purposes it's overkill.
For _my_ home purposes anything that isn't character-based is
overkill. All I do is edit text and telecommunicate. Of course,
everyone else's mileage varies. I just wanted to make the point that
Apple has done the work to make up for some of their deficiencies –
even work that was supposed to have been done on the Amiga already
but hasn't. These new Macs will be announced at the end of the
month. You'll be impressed!
To bad they don't have an OS yet.
The hardware IS getting halfway impressive, but…
(But, then again, I suspect Macs were never meant to appeal to System
Programmers.)

The hardware is fully impressive. I came away thinking that Ami no longer
had any hardware advantage at all. You're right about the OS but some
might say it's unimportant till humans develop multitasking speech.
Wait'll you see these things.

Multitasking speech? Don't need that, I have a multitasking brain and
hands 🙂
Actually nobody can truly concentrate on more than one thing at a time,
but spinning off asynchronous tasks is well within everybody's
capabilities, and that's where the Amiga SHINES, and the Mac is pretty far
behind.

Yup, I know that but that doesn't at all diminish the achievements of
these new Macs. I thought the embargo date was Aug. 29 but I'm reading
about them now. Thing is, none of the items I've read have given ANY CLUE
as to how amazing they are. You can run the things by talking to them. Not
just the Finder but the applications too. Standard applications like Excel
and Word. Scotty would be pleased! They have a phone in software. NTSC &
S-video in and out. DSP. Lotsa stuff. They're really killer and with the
smooth integration one expects from Macintosh.
