#AMaxII+ & SCSI )8-( ?
14 messages in this thread
Stephen, Yeah, I have the SCSI.amhd (for the A2091) in Devs. This is
the dangdest thing! Raymond hasn't returned my call yet, so I'll
call (again) in a couple hours. Yikes, time for bed.

Depending on when I get the money (and the nerve) to buy an '040
accelerator, I will have a Trumpcard Pro for sale, and I'll sell pretty
darn cheap. Interested? I know for sure, it works with AMaxII+!
-Steve
Steve,
I think I'll wait on your Trumpcard pro offer. I swapped out 2091
controller cards, and had the same symptom. My local store (Media
Tree, formerly Computer Showcase), has seen the same AmaxII+ symptom
with a GVP card. He couldn't remember how he overcame the problem.
Tomorrow, I hope, I'll swap my 8520 chips…ya never know.
Steve,
Swapped the 8520 chips, no difference in symptoms. The first scsi access
locks up the mac, the hd light stays on, and if I type any key, the mouse
locks up too.
I've pulled Amax out and will try it in a friend's 2000 asap.
Those Quadra 840av 's are looking mighty attractive about now…

And what about the Emplant for color Quadra like performance on your
Amiga.
-Jonathan
Jonathan,
"And what about the Emplant…"
Yeah, I know, but "once burnt, twice shy". If I really want the Mac
utility do I really want the Amiga "emulator"?
And what about harddisk and syquest support. I want access to service
bureau high-end input and output devices. I don't necessarily want to run
mac apps. That's what was nice about the inexpensive AmaxII+ when it ran.
I'm also looking longingly and PhotoCD.
Jan
I am running my MAC emulation at Quadra 700 speeds on my 040 accelerated
A2000 and my boot drive is a MAC formatted Syquest cartridge that I take
back and forth to the office where I have a real MAC. Also, I do PhotoCD
just fine with the Emplant SCSI and a Toshiba CD-ROM drive. Also, a new
software for the Amiga AsimCDFS will read PhotoCD files under the Amiga
OS.
And on top of all that, the Emplant solution is _much_ cheaper than a real
MAC of equal performance.
-Jonathan
Jonathan,
I was also using a Syquest as my boot drive for Emplant, but it was a
little slow. (System 7 seems to be ALWAYS going back to the drive for
something.) Then I saw an ad for LaCie. They are holding a close out sale
and I picked up a 170meg external HD for $249. Things are alot snappier
now! You might want to check into it.
BTW the drive comes formatted with System 7.01 installed and 30megs of PD
and demo software!
…AutoPilot Engaged…
-Paul-
I too have a dedicated Quantum drive for Emplant… much faster.
-Jonathan
Jonathan,
No argument about an Emulator being much cheaper than a real Mac.
I'm just frustrated with the vagaries of multi-platform hardware
configurations. It's been two months, two harddrives, two controller
cards, and still I'm no closer to determining the cause of the AmaxII+ /
Amiga system SCSI failure.
Having two independent platforms would at least isolate the problems
inherent in each…

Oh yeah, what file formats does the new software for the Amiga AsimCDFS
write out from the PhotoCD? — TIA
I have not ever had a problem with my Emplant PP&S 040 and GVP HC8
combination. In fact, it runs much better than my real MAC at work.
I think the PhotoCD stuff rights out to IFF24.
-Jonathan
Jan,
The Quadra av is much more than an Emplant.
I agree about independent platforms. I've mostly given up on the idea of
using a BridgeBoard.
Malcolm
Hi Malcolm,
Yes, the Quadra av is much more $$$$.$$ than an Emplant. Really, I don't
'want' to get one and the functionality of an Amax or an Emplant would
probably be enough, for the money anyway. But this stuff has got to
work!
I don't know if it's my motherboard, my 2091, my Amax, or the full moon
(actually, I know it's not the full moon, since I've been having trouble
since early June!)
I took my Amax to a friend's house and it wouldn't seat fully on his
motherboard (?). We received an entirely different error message and
never got near testing SCSI access. Zero conclusions from that one.
Luckily, -$$ requires me to go slowly, so I'll be able to eventually make
a reasonably educated guess when I haf'ta.

I have no problems with my Emplant. I used to have the AMAX, but it
caused me problems, was not color, MAC + emulation only and took over the
system _AND_ is more expensive… I sold it and now have a fully
functional Emplant that works great and runs circles around most MACS.
