Hello All. I've been playing around with my new A2386 and have run into a couple problems. The install seems to work ok however my system crashes upon reboot. I solved that by removing enforcer and setting cpu to nodatacache. (I just downloaded the new enforcer and will try that out). 1. OK now the real problem. It seems that the janus handler does not load, when trying to load amouse I get an error that the "Amiga could not load MouseServ – AMOUSE not installed." I did double click on the mouseserve icon and did it again a requester pops up to inform me that "Amouse is already active". 2. Next when trying to load jlink I get an error "Janus handler not loaded". Now near as I can tell the version of janus I have is 36.83, and now that I look at it I do not see the janus revs listed in the dos window. 3. while trying to install windoze the setup program stops at the beginning of the second disk. I have verified that the file it is looking for is indeed there. About my A2386 system. I have a 3.5" HD floppy and a 5.25" floppy. These are real clone drives. I also have a 50 mb hard disk a la st506. And the orginal 1 mb ram. By the way anyone know if I can use SC-ZIPS instead of the Page Mode? (Realizing I forfit the Page Mode Capability). Any help would be greatly appreciated. (Now if someone would only make a new Zorro backplane toss out the video slots and give me another pc slot) Thanks James via AutoPilot With Motorola Inside and Intel Outside

The Janus handler always loads with Binddrivers. If the Janus library isn't loaded when Binddrivers is run, then you have a problem which should be solved by running Enforcer QUIET or CPU nodatacache. However, if you have more than about 7 meg of 16 bit RAM in the Amiga autoconfig space, the BB won't work. I don't know if that't the case in your setup. If you have an older accelerator which doesn't load it's 32 bit RAM above the autoconfig space, and you have additional 16 bit RAM, you may have too much memory and the BB won't work. You also could have these problems if the Janus memory segment isn't set correctly. Open PCPrefs and be sure it's set to D000. As for Windoze. It won't work unless you have at least 2 meg of RAM on the BB, and even then it's basically useless. Windows needs a minimum of 4 meg for any useful work and 8 meg is much better. It probably stops because you don't have sufficient RAM.

Steven, -> The Janus handler always loads with Binddrivers. I've often seen this said but it just ain't so with the 2500 I have. Nothing happens till I click PC Mono or PC Color. Just FYI. Malcolm

Malcolm, BindDrivers "activates" the interface and loads the library (janus.library) PCMono or PCColor open a window to the interface. You can not run PCMono or PCColor without first doing a binddrivers. In fact if you'll notice, the PCside holds off a reboot until you run the binddrivers command. This is exactly why the PCside can boot off an Amiga side HD…the PC doesn't get to the stage of looking for an HD until after the binddrivers occurs…which means that AmigaDOS is up and running…which is, of course, necessary to access and Amiga side HD. Don, Binddrivers is the 22nd command in the s-s. When the thing finishes booting, janus.library is NOT in memory and the PC is not even remotely awake. When I dbl-clk PC Mono, the window opens and I see the BIOS message and RAM test. With a disk in the drive it'll boot. I once used MakeAB but didn't know what it took to use it. When I run JLINK, I get Amiga Service not available. Malcolm

Malcolm, Let's put it this way…try clicking on the PCMono ICON before you run binddrivers <grin>. Again…it seems a fairly common problem with some of the older machines that you have to do a 2nd binddrivers and pcreset before the amiga services are available. Don

Oh, OK. That's different. I did another binddrivers and PCHard. Still no Amiga services. <sigh> Malcolm

Malcolm, Humm…'PCHard'…that's part of the _old_ Janus software, the new version is called 'PCReset'. You may have an incomplete install of the new software. Also, my scriptfile that does the reset says: PCReset BindDrivers in that order. It can not be run from the startup-sequence, I don't know why…it just doesn't work there…but works fine from a CLI after the startup-sequence. Don

Don, Yes, I have an incomplete install of the new software – as in… none of it! This is old with a capital O. I think I'm probably gonna give it back anyway. Malcolm

PCHard??? Malcolm, it sounds like you have your Janus's mixed up. PCHard came with the older version of Janus (2088 or 20286). The A2386 comes with PCReset. Maybe you better wipe out your PC drawer and reinstall from the proper Janus disk. 73, Kelly

James: Re your mouse problem: You aren't supposed to touch the MOUSESERV program on the Amiga side. Instead, you run the AMOUSE.EXE program which should be available on the PC side of your system (if you put it there). When AMOUSE executes it will automatically tell the Janus handler to go do its thing with MOUSESERV. Do NOT run MOUSESERV on the Amiga side (or anything else in that drawer, for that matter)! This is covered in the manual. Once AMOUSE is run, you must hit Left-Amiga-P to switch the mouse to the PC side, and again to switch it back to Amiga use. — Ron Legro from Milwaukee via AUTOPILOT (The only way to fly)

Well if I don't double click on the icon in my services drawer they don't run. Maybe I have something else wrong. Thanks anyway James via AutoPilot With Motorola Inside and Intel Outside

James, They must be in SYS:PC/SERVICES, but if they're there…they WILL run when you startup the appropriate PC side program. Don
#111680From: JAMES THOMPSONAug 28, 1993 9:11 AM
Ok you are right they are located in my pc/services drawer. However They do not load unless I reboot the A2386. Thanks James via AutoPilot With Motorola Inside and Intel Outside

James, Having to reboot the BB is not that uncommon. In fact, it's often necessary to redo the BindDrivers command and use PCReset to get things working ok. Don

Ok thanks. I just thought something had to be wrong for me to have to reboot the 2386. Thanks again James via AutoPilot With Motorola Inside and Intel Outside

Then you've got the wrong versions over on the PC side, or the PC side Janus executables aren't there at all. From the JANUS subdirectory on the PC side, run AMOUSE.EXE and leave the services drawer stuff alone. — Ron Legro from Milwaukee via AUTOPILOT (The only way to fly)
