Can you provide a brief explanation of the Exabyte and drivers. I
think it is the route my employer wants to follow, but until I joined
c-serve, I couldn't find any info whatsoever!
David – As you've read the thread, I'll elaborate and give you a
contact # for further info. Basically with the ASDG Abacus driver you
are able to convert your rendered animation to the Abacus Digital
disk CCR-601 format. The conversion is done to the Exabtye 8650 tape
drive. This tape can then be sent to a service bureau where it is
transferred to D1. It is a very cost effective way to get D1 quality
without the associated overhead. For more detailed info you can

The Exabyte is an 8mm digital tape drive that enjoys great popularity
in the service bureau and workstation world, therefore is the
hardware of choice for doing animation file exchange the Abekas.
The ASDG drivers, as I understand, convert .TGA files rendered in
whatever package to .QTL (Quantel) files and stores them on the 8mm
tape via the Exabyte 8500 or better. You then take this tape to your
local Abekas post production house and load the files on to the
Abekas. This takes about 6 seconds per tape. Most services I know
of cost @ $200 per hour, which gives you about fourty seconds worth
of tape. Pretty good deal for D1 digital.
I'll be recieving the ASDG drivers any day now, and will lay my first
Exabyt-Abekas-BetaSP stuff in the next couple of weeks. I'll post my
success/failure as it happens.
