I have seen the name SANYO as applied to a deck and sounds as if it is low cost. I tried reading through the message to get the model number and the price but never did find it. Could someone let me in on how much this deck is? Thanks Muchly Merlin G. Farmer

Merlin, Sony also has a S-VHS deck which some say will hold up to animation work. I don't remember the exact model number (SVO-????) and the price is good although it needs a few options to make it useful for frame-accurate work and Sony is not touting it for that application. Ostensibly they say it's not built for it, in actuality they may just be protecting their hi-8 animation market. I think that the whole deck may come in at $3500 equiped with the options – that's a wild guess, so I hope somebody can put me straight. Martin

Thanks Martin. I will check that out. Not a bad price on it either. I'd rather spend more money for a hi quality industrial deck but I am hoping that a 2 or 3 Grand $ deck will hold me over and make my money back until I can get into the more elaborate setup. Yes quite possible Sony is trying to hold their interest in the HI-8 area. Thanks again

Marlin, Either Kevin Krell, Evan Yares or someone took a close look at the Sanyo and "was not impressed". I wouldn't be a guinny pig if I were you. Let someone else risk their money. Ang

Videomedia (V-LAN) makes a full time business out of testing and writting interfaces for various decks that come on the market. We really don't push one manufacturer over the other but we will not pull any punches on siting the shortcomings of various decks as they pertain to specific applications (such as animation). We are in the process of evaluating the Sanyo deck. Long term reliability does not look good at this point. Users that wish a complete list of all types and models of decks suitable for animation and/or editing can obtain such from the Videomedia FAXBACK system (408)227-9977. You must dial this from a FAX machine cradle phone. Ask for document #1005. Good luck BS

I've been wrestling with the Sanyo issue for some time now, and after talking with various people on and off this forum, have decided the deck is not robust enough for my purposes. I spoke with Bill Stickney at Videomedia, where they have been testing the deck, and he says long term reliability is not looking good. Paul Lind saw the insides of the deck and said it was VERY lightweight. I'm going with the Sony SVO 9600, $3100 bucks for the PRO (RS-422, TBC) from Columbia, a Sony authorized dealer in Chicago. It seems to be a more solidly built machine. John Tissavary (La Luna cie)
