I'll would like some help.
I would like to know which PS font format to download which will convert
to CG Fonts eg Mac or PC.

Gary,
You'll need both the .AFM and the .PFB (Printer Font Binary) font
files. The macintosh format is convertible to IBM format (.PFB) but
the .AFM (Adobe Font Metrics) file is not always included with them.
You can find in the DTPForum entire archives of just .AFM files.
There is a program in the libraries that will convert macintosh
printer fonts to the ibm version.

The conversion program is call MI-M2I. It is in the libraries, I'll look around
and find the exact LIB and filename for you.
Usually the description of the font includes what files are contained within
the archive. So when you collect the library's catalog with AutoPilot you
should be able to relax, sit back and read them off-line. There are other
platforms' utilities available that are able to generate the much needed .AFM
files from the MACINTOSH printer and screen font.
One on the mac is called Metamorphosis Professional. I'd have to check for the
name on the intel machine but I think one is called ALLFONT.

I think you mean Atech's ALLTYPE. Course, we've also got Soft-Logik's
TypeSmith now (which needs to be mentioned in all such discussions). A way
cool application.

I acknowledge TypeSmith, but does it convert MAC-type Postscript printer
and screen fonts to the .PFB and .AFM files? Will it generate .AFMs from
the .PFM? I know Metamorphosis Professional for the MAC does both, but
what of TypeSmith and ALLTYPE? Are there others that do this too?
The PFB and AFM are what is needed for the Fontmanager program by Gold
Disk to create Compugraphic files for PPage and PDraw.

No, TypeSmith does not currently load Mac format PostScript fonts. These must
first be converted using a PD utility. We would like to add this to a future
version given time. PFM files are not currently supported but we plan to
support these in the next version.
TypeSmith loads and saves MS-DOS format PFB and AFM files.
If you own a Soft-Logik program, you will soon receive another issue of DTP
World which discusses new features for TypeSmith.

Can't put my hands on the appropriate info right now but Michael Loader
can tell you whatever you'd want to know about TypeSmith. I have some
bumpf on AllType at the office that I can check sometime tomorrow.

As a matter of fact, we can now send you info on TypeSmith 2.0. All registered
Soft-Logik owners should be receiving another issue of DTP World in the mail
soon. (They were bulk mailed last week for US customers, and air mailed to
other customers worldwide this week I believe. German customers must contact
DTM for information. Swedish customers must contact ProComp.)
TypeSmith 2.0 has lots of new features, including multiple open fonts,
PostScript and Intellifont hints, autotracing, bitmap font
creation/generation/editing, rulers, draggable guides, more arexx commands and
more.
The retail price is unchanged at $199.95. Upgrade from 1.0 is $50 plus shipping
($5 in the US/Canada, $15 foreign.) If you purchased TypeSmith 1.0 after August
15, you can upgrade to TypeSmith 2.0 free of charge.
Customers who purchased FontDesigner (the forerunner to TypeSmith and sold in
Europe only) can upgrade to the Soft-Logik program. I believe the price is $75
but I'm not sure of this.
Upgrades come with a new manual (no addendum!)
TypeSmith 2.0 will ship in September. (Sorry, it won't ship in time for the WOC
show in Pasadena.)

My question is when will TypeSmith enable construction of Colorfonts
and/or Color Toaster fonts?

No, TypeSmith doesn't do colorfonts. While it saves Amiga bitmap fonts, its
bitmap font feature is intended for creating screen fonts for publishing.

Geez, I hope it doesn't! I wouldn't pay for an upgrade like that. I'm
strictly a "print on paper" kind of guy. IMHO, you should be looking for a
different application.

Will the new TypeSmith obviate the need for the FontFix ARexx program that
uses t1ascii and t1binary?

Um, what's the FontFix arexx script do? Is that the one that made some changes
to make the fonts work with Post? If so, that was fixed in 1.01.

conventions.

Thanks for that. I just want to check, will the font convert to cg fonts
and PS using font manager that came with PPage after runing them through
MI-M2I.

As long as you have the printer font and the font metrics file Fontmanager
should convert it.
There are some shareware Type 1 Postscript fonts that won't convert
properly with Fontmanager. These were generated with a program called
Fontographer version 3.5 (I believe that is the right version number),
though other earlier versions seem to work fine.

I've tried downloading a font and thanks to Betty everything went well.
But now I need to unpack it. The font is BIP035.sit. Could you tell me
which prog I need to use.

You'll need a program called UNSIT or UNSTUFF
The .SIT is for archives using STUFFIT and its a macintosh program.
It has been upgraded and the older Amiga program UNSIT can't handle anything
higher than StuffIT 1.51.
Look in LIB 16 of Amigauser for the unstuffing programs.
