I am going nuts trying to get patchmeister to work. I have read the
manual about 20 times, tried lots of things…I cannot get any of the
listed bank sounds to play (they all play the same piano sound on my
Proteus 1). I did something, don't know what, and was told there was
no sysex data with the bank. My Proteus LOOKS like it is
transmitting this data. Could you go over clearly the steps I should
be taking? Thanks.

I'll leave it to Adam Nitti to go over the exact steps you need to take
to get the Proteus to work with the PatchMeister. Just one thing I thought
I'd mention. Make sure that the Sysex channel for the Proteus is set to
the same channel as the Sysex channel on the PM.

I really need to work this out. The channels are set the same. I notice
that when I use the keyboard I play any patch that I dial on the Proteus
but when I click onto a patch in a bank it switches the proteus
immediately back to its first patch which is a piano. It seems that the
driver is not sending a patch change command. I am trying to study the
driver…I would assume it was written correctly but it sure does not seem
to work. In my Bars&Pipes I can use the quick patch to hear the various
sounds but if I change the patch list it lists other patches but uses the
main list (changes patch names but does not again change the patch. This
will be OK if I stick only with my original 0-127 patches and make no new
changes…rather defeating the purpose of a library!
I appreciate your and hopefully Adam Mitti's help, and would welcome
hearing from someone who successfully has used the proteus driver. After
weeks of trying to solve this one I am thinking it is a defect in the
driver.

Good News! There is an updated driver on our BBS which takes care of this
problem. (You weren't doing anything wrong.)
As it turns out, the original Proteus driver was created on an XR. It was our
understanding originally that the XR and the Proteus handled their banks in the
same way, but they don't.
When the Proteus tries to audition a patch, it sends it to a reserved "slot"
(Bank 1, sound 1) and the driver makes an attempt to play it there. The problem
is that on the XR, this was in a RAM bank, so instrument patches could be
written to there with no problem.
The Proteus, on the other hand, uses a ROM bank there, so naturally,
auditioning the instrument patch there resulted in hearing the same thing all
of the time (piano sound), because no new instruments could be placed there.
In any case, the problem is fixed, and you can download the updated driver from
The Blue Ribbon Connection BBS (404-315-0211).

Many thanks. I have the new driver and it works just fine. It actually
was fun trying to learn more about the sysex instructions and how the
driver was made up while I was exploring my dilemma.

I don't think I can figure out the problem without being there. Are you
using a MIDI patchbay?
Maybe you should call Blue Ribbon at (404) 315-0212, between 1pm and
5pm EDT, and ask for Annette. She wrote the Proteus driver.
