#A1000 upgrade

Hello I'm new to this forum and to CIS. Glad to be here.
I have a A1000 and was wondering if it is possible to upgrade to to WB 2.1
without having Kwikstart installed?
I've had my A1000 since 1985, but have not used it much the last few years and
I'm trying to catch up on all of this stuff.
I read somewhere that the WB 2.1 upgrade is a software only package. So I
figured it had a Kickstart disk in it. (That tells you how long I've been
away). I've really had no need to upgrade, but I just purchased a Supra 14.4K
modem and read where anything above 9600 is not reliable with WB 1.3. So I
thought it was time to upgrade.
I've been looking for a terminal program that supports 14.4K. I'm using NComm
right now but it doesn't support 14.4K. Does term 4.0 support 14.4K? I
downloaded it but quickly learned that you need WB 2.04 or higher to run it and
that it doesn't work very well on a 68000 machine. Could somebody recommend a
terminal program that supports 14.4K?

No I am afraid the only way to run 2.04 or higher is by using the
Kickstart ROM. Kickstart for 2.0 is 512K and the WCS on the stock 1000 is
only 256K. 2.1 is a software only upgrade to those who already have
the 2.0 Kickstart ROM installed. There are upgrade kits for 2.1 which
include the 2.05 ROM, but you would need the Kwikstart installed.

Thanks for responding. Do they still make the Kwikstart boards? About
how much do they cost? How much memory can you put on a Insider II board and
what type of chips do they take? About how much do they cost? Do you know of a
good mail order place that has them? Sorry about all the questions. Thanks

according to the ads in the back of my MultiStart II manual, Insider II
costs $199.95 list and comes with 0K of RAM. It is upgradable in
increments of 512K, using 256Kx4 DRAMs, to 1.5 MB. KwikStart II for the
A1000 lists for $99.95 without the ROMs.
I'm pretty sure that DKB is still making them, but you can ask them
either here (leave a request for information in DKB Software's section in
AmigaVendor) or call them at their sales number (313) 960-8750.

Thanks for the info. I have an Alegra board (remember those?) with 2
Megs. Back in 1987 2.5M used to be a pretty good setup, today you need at least
that much to run alot of programs. If you don't mind my asking which model
Amiga do you have, and how much memory do you have?

my A1000 has 2.5 MB using a Starboard. My A2000 has 6 MB. My A500 has
3 MB. However, you are right, 3 MB seems to be the lower bound these
days. If I'm not careful, FinalWriter runs out of memory on the A500.
One of these days, I'll upgrade the memory in it, or swap out the
motherboard for an A1200 motherboard and upgrade the memory at the same
time.

I see Brian answered most of your questions. I would think the best bet
these days is to go right to DKB rather than mail order. There isn't
too much 1000 specific stuff being sold these days. Glad to help.

Glad to help. I have 1 meg chip RAM, and the 68030 accelerator has 8.5
meg 32-bit fast RAM, (512K of the 32-bit holds the ROM).

You have all that on a 1000. How?

Simple, you replace the WCS board with a Rejuvenator, change the internal
floppy with a 1/3 height version and then the accelerator/RAM sits on top
of the shield. The SCSI interface is snapped on the side. Then I still
have the video slot unused if I want to add a genlock or flickerfixer.
