We found out that the caching controller from PROMISE
TECHNOLOGY CORPORATION does not work in an XT (8-bit) slot as the
salesperson told us over the phone. The DC99 comes from the
factory without any memory and won't work without at least 512 KB that is
80 nanoseconds or faster. (The DC99M has memory
installed.) We put in 2 SIMM banks of 256KB each at 70 ns access time.
With enough memory and an AT (16-bit) slot the ISA IDE
Caching Disk Controller drives the signal reliably through the 3- foot
ribbon cable into the Maxtor 7345A IDE drive. The Maxtor
has 330 megabytes and 13 milliseconds access time.
It takes time to put the system together and take it apart
since the drive is in an external case with its own power supply.
The technicians found an 8-bit graphics card for an XT slot. The
card drives the NEC 1401P3A multi-sync monitor.
BTW, did you see the Monday, August 1 issue of the WALL
STREET JOURNAL? There was an article by Jim Carlton, "Hop, Hop,
BANG! A Professional Killer Stalks Kangaroos." "The kangaroos
proliferate because so many water tanks for livestock have been
set up across Australia." Apparently, the kangaroos need to be
harvested to avoid overpopulation. This harvesting also gives
meat, leather products, rugs, and an export commodity from the
kangaroos.
Hopefully, the kangaroos won't become as scarce as buffalo!

Thanks for the report about the controller.
Interesting about the kangaroos… just a few years ago they were trying to cut
back on the "harvesting" because it was wiping them out. I guess they went too
far the other way!
