I'm having a slight problem with ray traced shadows. I was doodling around today with creating the windows logo in 3DS and it seems no matter what I do my light will not cast colored shadows through the different colored panes of glass in the logo. There are four colored panes – red, blue, yel, and grn. They are all 2 sided, 53% transparent with sub,out and a slight amount of trans falloff. The light is a spot set at 180 with ray traced shadows. The shadows cast as if they are shining through glass – they are brighter than the surrounding shadows but they are not tinted at all as I would expect. Anyone got any ideas? Dave Mennenoh

I don't believe the ray-traced shadows consider the filtering of light through transparent colored surfaces, just intensity/opacity. You'll have to fake it, possibly with a projector light. BILL

Thanks for the reply Bill. Hmmm, I really thought that RT shadows _did_ take into account colored surfaces. I guess not through as they aren't. <g> I'll see what I can do with a projector light. Shouldn't be that difficult. Dave Mennenoh

Nope, they seem to only consider luminance values. BILL

Our upcomming book 3D Studio Special Effects describes how to produce these colored shadows. It's a very excellent technique developed by Tim Forcade at Forcade and Associates. Also, David Stinnett's awesome (the only word that fits) whale animation is in the book along with 18 other special effects. In all, three of the special effect projects in the book are on the 3DS SIGGRAPH '94 demo reel. The book will be shipping in September. We're taking orders now. 1-800-428-5331. Pavel, The price of the book is USD$50. I won't be able to guess on the cost of shipping because I'm not involved in any way with the shipping or sales department. I just manage the project. I'm not sure, but until the book ships to bookstores, I think the only way to pre-order the book is directly from our sales department. The number (outside the US and Canada) is 317-581-3500. Ask for the New Riders Publishing order department. Once the book arrives in bookstores, you will be able to order the book from CompuBooks here on CIS. You can also tint shadows by tinting your Ambient light. – Phil

Phil, as I explained in my message there are 4 colored windows in which the shadows are casting through, so tinting the amibient would not work. Godd tip though. Dave Mennenoh
