#copying groups of keys
32 messages in this thread
I frequently need to repeat a large group of keys in the key info box. IE, a
morph sequence that needs to be repeated several times, back to back. Isn't
there an easier way than copying one key at a time?
thats something that i would like to see too. the option of selecting a group
of keys and performing an operation on the selected set.
i second you on that wish item.
take care

it makes a lot of sense. I'm constantly having to establish repetetive motions,
and copying each key over to the next appropriate frame is tedious – and i
always lose track about half way through.
I was talking to someone at schreiber instruments tech support an i thought
they suggested a method of doing that – but maybe i was mistaken.

Couldn't you do this with file insert? Not having used file insert it alot, I
dunno.

i am sure thee are work arounds like file insert but i dont know of a direct
way!
i hope they add this option.

No easy way right now. Once people get the new Scripting language in their
hands, you can bet someone will code this and put it up on the forum.

i thought for sure there was some way of copying groups of keys – I think
someone at schreiber instruments told me about it – even if it's only a trick.
what is the scripting languag – i haven't heard about it.
Hey Mark,
You can easily copy a group of keys using the file insert. One easy way to do
this is to save a track file (simply a 3DS file consisting of your object
keyframed only over the range of keys you want to copy). Then with the frame
counter on the frame you want to copy those keys to, choose Object/Track/File
Insert, pick the object, then pick the track file.
You might want to experiment a little with a simple object first to understand
how it works with the various options. (Also, things can get interesting when
you have certain rotation keys, etc.) I just made a ten-key track file and
inserted it six times. It took longer to type this than it did to do the
keyframing and file inserts.

thanks for the help on this, i'll give it a try. it seems like a
prime candidate for a wish list, but its probably too late for this.
the one problem i've alway had with 3ds is that it behaves so
differently than autocad. no o-snaps, copying and editing techniques,
etc. you can tell it wasn't written by engineers or autocad users. in
and of itself it's fine, but when its being published by autocad, you
expect it to behave similarly, and it doesn't. oh well, its still a
fine program; but i still wish i had o-snaps!
I second the motion for AutoCad-like, o-snaps (as well as a bunch of
other AutoCad-like features, like a simple Distance function in
addtion to the silly Tape!) However, I can still work much faster in
3DS than Acad and the 3D interface is much better (IMHO). And since
the output of Acad is usually precision and the output of 3DS is
usually trickery, I suppose there is some consolation.
JKJ
(BTW, AutoCAD and 3DS are published by Autodesk, not published by autocad – but
you knew that!)
<<the output of AutoCAD is precision and the output of 3DS is usually
trickery>>
major belly laugh at my end…gary

I, uh…THIRD it <g>.
BILL
R4's Bezier moduele will give you a vertex snap to exisiting vertices
(hey, it's at least a start <g>).

I'll take it <g>.
BILL
and i "fouth" it.
ara
I am all for it Osnaps in 3ds !!
Yes, I did know the publisher, autodesk. And you're right about that stupid
tape – that's the sorriest excuse for a feature I ever saw!
thanks,

Details on the scripting language can be found in message #114476 or
check out the file R4FEAT.TXT. I think you will be excited by what
you read!!
thanks, will do
thanks, i'll look into it.
I third you on that wish item. Perhapts with the new scripting capabilities of
3DS4 we will get this.
Zac (AZ-TECH)
Berkeley
i'll have to look into it.
why are you in berkley, and called az-tech. I'm in arizona…does that make me
cal-tech? <G>
Mark;
I think you have to keep looking east-ward for you name. If you are in
Arizona then perhapts you should be Mis-TECH. <G>
Zac
Ain't no Mis-tech here, we beat the Lakers, didn't we? – in fact what we didn't
beat, we bought!
Well, if you can't beat-em, buy-em!
You may get your chance next year. Word has it Barkley wimped out of the rehab
program for his back; and my wife, who is a nurse on the hospital floor where
Barkleys doctor practices, says……………………

Your just going to leave me hanging, aren't you?
Yup – it's privelaged – and my wife would shoot me if I say anything more.
Actually, we don't know here. He's back in Phili and he may be doing some
rehab there. But the news media has moved on, and nobody knows.
Mark,
I see that many others have given you good advice on the File Insert trick.
Here's another possibility, if the sequence need to repeat all the way
through to the end of the animation then:
1) Set up the repeating sequence of keys (e.g., a morph sequence).
2) Click on Key Info and select the object.
3) Click on the appropriate key track and turn on the Repeat button.
The sequence will now repeat itself until the end of the animation.
Steven
that is very nice!
but one minor problem with that is that you really have no control over the
number of loops!
ara
PMJI
Try Multi Slide it's part of the Power Utilities package distributed by
Digimation.
Multi Slide will give control on the number of loops and ping pong effect and
much more.

thanks for the tip.
i think that will be my next ipas.
