Report from Washington DC….
Well, its pretty damm cold out here. -5 without wind chill this
morning. I know its cold because my trusty 1985 Lebaron GTS Turbo ..
a car which always starts with the 1st turn of the key (assuming that
I have gas in the tank). Well last evening, when I tried to go home
from work .. my car said .. "No thank you". The 1st time this has
happen since I had the car. Now, I've taken this car into cold
area's before .. skiing in New Hampshire and Vermont in January and
Feb. .. but last night .. it just couldn't take it.
Minus 21 up here this morning. I stopped for gas this morning and
could only stand to put in $10 for the cold. I replaced the nozzle
and turned around to see some twenty year old in shorts and a T-shirt
behind me pumping gas. It takes all kinds, I guess he is still
alive. We're shaking but the ground isn't. (;-] BTW still waiting
for snail mail.
Ang – gee, am I ever glad I live in the Great White North! It's been
hovering around five degrees here (that's Celcius, of course–about
40 deg F) and either overcast or rainy. Mind you, that only holds for
Vancouver and the first 100 miles east of it. The other 4,900 miles
are in the deepfreeze!
Dave,
No kidding those of us east of you are in the deep-freeze…..I'm in Saskatoon
where it's been averaging about -25 celsius since Jan.1/94 (that's about -15
deg F). I think it went down to -43 celsius (-45 deg F) last Sunday night.
Yet in the summer, around here, the temp. can run up as high as 40 celsius or
104 deg F……Yup, we get a full range of weather here!
Later,
-Jeff
Jeff,
Sounds a lot like Kansas to me! We don't go that low (about -20 F), but we can
get to 115 F in the summer.
I don't feel so bad now!
Chuck
Yo, Jeff! Saskatoon?!? What do you do (way up <g>) there? I've been to
Saskatoon twice in the last year working on a project with IRD (International
Road Dynamics), the last time was in December. Yep, cold – had to plug in the
car. It was about -8 F here in Tennessee yesterday AM.
Saskatoon is the only place I've ever seen where they deliver Domino's pizzas
in BMW's.
JKJ (lot further south but not much warmer)
John,
Well how 'bout that?!? I own and operate a technical services company, using
3D Studio, ACAD, etc., etc. and provide tech. & training services for an
Authorized AutoCAD & MM dealer here.
I know of the folks over at IRD….one of my staff speaks with a couple of
their engineers on occasion. What is it that you specialize in for IRD?
Anyway, if you're planning another trip here again, drop me an email and maybe
we can arrange to meet for some beers….er uh, refreshments <G>.
Later,
-Jeff
Jeff,
Well, I wish I'd known about you earlier! I hope to go back, but not till it's
warmer.
IRD licensed a patent that I have, along with some colleagues, on a fiber-optic
weight sensing device. We are working with them on some spinoffs – kind of
business sensitive at the moment…
BTW, when I was there in December I showed them a video tape we produced on
some of our fiber-optic technologies. It had a series of animation segments I
did – they SEEMED impressed (they asked for a copy of the tape, anyway <g>). I
offered to work with them on the animation end if they decided to put together
a showcase video tape of their own. The thought occurs to me just now that you
might be more suited for working with them, since you live in the same city.
Should I steer them your way if they ask, or would you like a contact name to
'drop in' on?
I'll be sure to hollar if I head that way again. The first time I went to
Saskatoon it was in May. Nice then. <g>

Jeff – the Vancouver Sun ran quite a cruel pair of photos on the front page
this morning… a Vancouver mailman, in the sun, jogging along his route in
shorts and a short sleeve shirt. Beside it a shot of a man from Toronto with
a toque down to his eyebrows, and on his eyebrows, moustache and beard a
healthy growth of icicles… <brrrrrrrr>
Dave
Ang,
How's it comming on the "streaking map"? Looking for a file on my BBS!
Chuck
Chuck,
>> "streaking map"?<<
I uploaded the file to Gary and he put ;his finger on it right out. Our model
was so large, that we were "out of bounds" as far as the floating point
capability. We are going to scale the whole thing down and try again. Thanks
for the offer of help again and I'll see'ya in Feb!

All:
I just had to jump in here. It's subzero, without wind chill, and the whole
city, and surrondings have been shut down for the most of the week here in KY.
(Lexington) MALLS are closed, WalMart's shut down at 12:00 in the afternoon,
and now, you will get ticketed to be on the roads. There was freezing rain one
night, and then 8-10 inches of snow on top of that. Street crews plow the
snow, and make really long skating rinks! (They ran out of salt! <prepared,
no?>) My college classes were cancelled mon tues and wed. Kentucky is supposed
to be warm! Oh well, it beats Omaha. (brrr!)

And the network news has anchors standing in +8 degree weather in NYC
as if they're dying of cold… and there's more people dying in the
Midwest than in L.A., yet they get the 24-hour news coverage. As one
network meteorologist said, after giving the gratuitous 5 seconds of
coverage to the Midwest's weather, "they're hardy folk, so they can
handle it."
>"they're hardy folk, so they can handle it."
They are, and they can. 🙂 Midwesterners are good people, just less traffic,
and more corn. 🙂
