Help!
I'm doing some work on a flyer for a local charity, and I need someone who
could scan their logo for me. I am using PGS 2.2 and redesigning their
flyer.
I don't have any money in our budget to pay for this service. If you would

Sometimes when I need a quick scan and no scanner available I'll fax the
item to my computer. Later I can convert the FAX to IFF format and load it
into various draw/paint programs for touch-up. I've also been successful
at connecting a FAX machine AND the FAX/MODEM together via the same phone
line. Just go off-hook and wait until after the telco recording and
warning tones to subside. Then you'll have a nice quiet line. Start both
FAX machine and FAXmodem and watch for the connection and feed to start.

Another thing that can be done (although I don't know if anyone will admit
it) is to just connect the FAX machine & Faxmodem together with the same
wire (remove ma bell from the whole thing) and you get a really quiet
line. A friend of mine did that with 2 modems to move a file from his
powerbook to his atari and it worked fine.

Mike,
I had wondered about that but never tried it. But now that you reported success
doing it I'll give it a try. For some reason I thought it was necessary to have
some power in the lines.

A direct connection works for me, too.
But I'm told that some modems DO need to see line voltage in order to work.
Others have suggested that, in that case, a 9V battery hooked into the
connection will do all that is needed. (But since it works without same, I
have not personally tried it).

Put a resistor ( try 1 K to 5 K ohms) between the 9V battery and the modem
lines. It will work better then just the battery.

The resistor sounds like a good idea (as I said, hadn't tried the hookup
myself. Do you know if battery polarity makes any difference?

As I noted, my hookup works OK without a battery .. just disconnect the two
modems from the phone company line, leaving them connected to each other.

Battery polarity usually doesn't matter. Hows that for a non-straight
answer?
As I remember it, most phone line equipment does not care, but a few
things do. So if it still doesn't work with a battery and resistor, you
could try switching the batteries polarity.

It used to be a telephone system standard that the battery polarity at the
calling phone would REVERSE when the other end answered. I gather that the
purpose was to allow pay phones to collect your dime (how's that for
nostalgia?) …
I wondered if perhaps some modems might try to use this phenomenon to see if
a connect has taken place .. or key carrier, or something.
Again, though .. I haven't tried it, since my modems chug along happily with
no DC voltage supplied on the wires.

You can try geting rid of the modems altogether and using a null-modem
cable. It's even better and you can go as fast as the serial interfaces
allow, which is probably much faster than the modems.

Actually that would be kind of hard to do in our case as the Mac was a
powerbook, and has a built-in modem. Also I don't know if this would
matter or not, but the Mac has an RS422 serial port, and the Atari has an
RS232 port, I'm not sure if they are directly compatible or not.
