#MAPPING PROBLEMS

THANKS for the response to my problem with showing seams…….
Anyway, here's what I'm doing at the most basic level. I have in one
hand the top part of a spaceship hull where the cockpit should be.
what the hell let's add a window…so I select/face/quad and tag a
portion of the hull that looks like an alien porthole and then
create/face/detach and subsequently this new porthole object is
created. Now, no matter what i do, and I took your advice quite
seriously about chapter 10 in INSIDE 3D STUDIO(I HAVE IT TOO)
pertaining to welding adjacent vertices to create proper smoothing
and even wiping out existing smoothing groups I CAN STILL SEE THOSE
SEAMS!!&* *&&&^&%^^54#5!!!!!! Whether i reattach the porthole to the
base object the same occurs. WELDING….WELL…I tried selecting the
porthole, since it is now an object and now highlighted in red. I
selected to weld all selected vertices and this too had the seams
show through. You mentioned welding the vertices individually. TO
what? To vertices within the selection group or to the vertices that
lie coincident to the selection set? Although I do want to keep the
mapping on the second object(porthole) I merely selected to weld all
selected vertices to see if the seams would show….alas…….ONE
stuck dude. I can't fly the ship in an animation with the seams
showing………HELLLLLLPPPPPPPP!!!!!!!!!!

To "sew" the porthole into the ship's body, I believe.

Hello Stephen,
If you DETACHed faces into your window object, then reATTACHed the window
without moving it, you will have two elements with the vertices around the
edges of the window lined up exactly with the vertices of the hole. These
matching vertices must be welded.
You mentioned that you "tried selecting the porthole, since it is now an object
and now highlighted in red". If you can still select the window it with the
Select/Object/Single command, it is NOT reattached to the hull, and must be
first attached with the Create/Object/Attach command.
Once attached, you must weld the vertices around the window to the vertices
around the hole. There are two good ways to weld the vertices. 1) Use
Modify/Vertex/Weld and one at a time, select each vertex in turn, drag to move
it slightly (!), then release the mouse and answer OK to the "Weld this
vertex?" dialog. If you don't get the dialog, the vertex wasn't welded. 2)
Using the quad or fence selection, select all the vertices around the perimeter
of the window, and weld them all at once with Modify/Vertex/Weld "Selected".
If you didn't mess with the smoothing groups, you'll be back exactly as you
started and there will be no seam.
Note that you should always hide the faces on the back side of an object when
working on the front, but you probably already knew that. <g>
If you can't get it smoothed, I'd be glad to look at it tonight if you email
just the hull & window to me (use email, don't upload to the forum).
