I just got a P5/90 with an MGA Ultima 4meg PCI. I can't get the latest (or
any) vibrant drivers to recognize it, although all other programs do (windoze,
mga setup, etc…). Any ideas?

I'm working on the same components.
Am am using the Vibrant Inline Drivers Ver 1.02.
The is a Option to choose the MGA II. AS i tested – the driver is the same as
for The MGA2 Ultima+200/4MB.
Another possibility could be, that you have choosen a wrong frequency-set in
matrox Monitor-Selection-Setup.
You'll find the needed drivers in this forum or in the Matrox forum "GO
CIS:GRAPHB", Section "Matrox".

This is the thing: I've configured the MGA properly in mga setup, the monitor
is having no troubles whatsoever, and I'm chosing Ultima 2+

* 4Mb Graphics Card
* 64Mb RAM
* 1 Gb SCSI HD
* CD-ROM
May be so bold as to ask a) which brand of machine/motherboard you bought and
b) how you are liking the MGA II ???
I have been confused by vendors' claims to have "truer" Pentium motherboards —
especially in how memory and caching are implemented. I have also been
alarmed by a steady stream of threads from people with problem p90s…

I think the problems with P90's are chipset based. I just replaced an OPTI
chipset motherboard (supermicro) with an Intel chipset MB (Intel brand).
I haven't noticed much difference in performance, but the OPTI chipset used a
PCI standard for multiprocessor MB's that I suspect cause the vibrant driver to
not find the MGA board. I don't have that problem with the Intel (Intel
Neptune chipset).
The MGA PCI is idiot proof – just plug it in and go. No exclusions, no
jumpers, nothing <g>!
So far I haven't had any problems with the Intel. The glitches from the OPTI
based board are not present in this one.

Hi John,
What sort of problems have you had with your MGA card? I have a Gateway P90
with a Matrox 2mb PCI board and about 1 out of 6 starts into 3DS, the system
hangs, right about the time it normally switches into the graphics mode.

Since changing P5/90 motherboards to an Intel based one from an OPTI based one
I've had no problems at all. The MGA works flawlessly. I did a little
research, and it seems there is more than one spec for PCI 2.0, the dual
processor spec in the OPTI chipset might have been causeing the problems I
expereinced.

Boy, everything you ever wanted to know about PCI specs 101! Don't you love
having to learn all this animation related stuff?

Yes, sometimes I spend more hours getting a system running than animating. I
just have to bank these days as a "necessary evil". Fortunately I don't hate
hardware altogether – I used to enjoy working on motorcycles.
