#How much RAM?

I am going to be purchasing 3D-Studio and AutoVISION for DOS, along with AutoCAD 12 DOS. I have 16 megs of ram but I think I will need more. I don't want my hardware to be constantly paging onto the disk because I think that could wear out the disk drives and also it would be slower. My 3D-Studio demo says only 8 M of ram is needed, but I don't know if that's a minimum or what. Does anyone out there know how much ram I should install in my computer? JR

The specified 8 megabytes of RAM is the _minimum_ you need to run 3D Studio. You're quite right — you'll want more. The amount you need depends on the type of projects you plan on doing. You could easily start out with 16 meg while learing the system and then boost your RAM to 32 or 64 as you feel you need it. And, by the way, welcome to the ASOFT forum and to 3D Studio! – Jack

Hi, J.R. 8 MB is a BARE minimum. 16 MB is probably enough for doing small projects, but sooner or later you will need more. I have 32 MB now and have been finding this to be inadequate for my needs…will upgrade to 64 MB soon. A general rule-of-thumb is: the-more-the-better!:) Regards, Connie

Hi Connie, Got Planet Studio, thanks very much – I really appreciate it. I can't say that I'd pay $10 an issue for it though. I really don't know how they think they can charge that much. It was pretty non-informative except for Ed Kellermans article. Oh well, I wonder what the general consensus will be on it. What are your thoughts on it? Dave Mennenoh

>>I wonder what the general consensus will be on it. << I'm with you, what they teased us with at the show isn't worth $10.00 an issue (and that's supposed to be a 40% savings??). The next issue better offer more value (and pages). Jamie

Regarding the Planet Studio Pricing Etc. My understanding was that the next issue would be 16 full color pages and since it's a fully dedicated 3D Studio Publication that puts it in the same class as the dedicated "toaster" Publication which goes for $120. I beleive…perhaps that's the reasoning. In any event I too would like to see the next issue but feel it's probably going to be worth it as I thought they were offering a Full Money-Back Guarantee….Uh….Hmmm Yup!!! There it is on the Special Charter Offer on the Cover…."Full Money-Back Guarantee" "If at any time during your subscription you decide that Planet Studio doesn't live up to your expectations, your are entitled to a full refund on all unmailed issues—no questions asked" I'd say that was pretty Fair!!! Wouldn't you?? Murph'

>>"Full Money-Back Guarantee" I saw that! I'm not sure but is that a first for a magazine subscription offer? (probably not) I'll wait and borrow Gary's copy. I'm sure he'll get one for free. Jamie

Hi, Dave. Glad to help. $10. per issue??! I didn't notice that…that's completely outrageous. I may have gotten more out of this issue than you did, but I would say maybe $3. would be more reasonable. I don't think ANYONE would pay $10. Regards, Connie

I would love a total 3ds pub. but 10 bucks, 120 per year? I better get software discounts for that.<BG> I would however be willIing to pay 5.

>> but 10 bucks, 120 per year? Not exactly. It's $60 per year… only 6 issues per year. The previews for the next issue don't appear to offer much more than what you can learn right here on CIS or from 3D Artist. I'm going to wait and see what the next one looks like… – Dave
