Ok I am out of school(ACAD) for two weeks and I want to build a 3d model of the
house we did in ACAD. I started lofting from the elevation but I might want to
use the floor plan. What I'm really getting at is I have never done a model of
a house from 2d plans and I want/need some advice on where I should start. I
find it very hard to make percise models in 3ds and we haven't done 3d in ACAD
yet so I started this for practice and the fact that it will look good on my
resume tape.

I've found that ACAD is a great place to draw accurate elevation views of each
wall. I draw each wall including the holes for the windows and export them as
DXF files. I bring them into 3DS as shapes and loft them to the proper wall
thickness. If you experiment with the location of the shape's HOOK and the
path position in the lofter, you can loft the walls right into their correct
location. 3D DISPLAY is crucial to this. Otherwise, just loft the shapes and
move/rotate them in the Editor.
If you do not need openings in your walls, you could loft the outline of the
building to its proper height instead. Again, AutoCAD would give you very
simple control over the accuracy of the floor plan.

I don't need to get too complex so I started with the elevation and lofted them
and the roof also (two flat 7/12 roofs) I used the floor plan for the soffits
and I will use it for the floor system but the problem I now have is 3
skylights in a wall, they cut back in @30%%d <G> and I don't have a elevation
view to loft from. I think I might monkey around with a cross section and try
that. So far so good, I can't belive I got so much done last night and this is
great fun I hope I get extra-credit but at any rate I think it is worthwhile to
do.

You could create the roof on the same plane as the walls or you could create a
skylight on the roof surface (after lofting the gable end to make roof and
overhangs in one pass) and map some sort of scene to the skylight surface to
look like a vague interior view or sky reflection.

I have the skylight thing all figured out, I will use a cross section dxf that
cuts through the windows. Also I am trying very hard to be a ACAD nurd.<LOL>
Don't sweat it as a rule Acad op's can't spell. Bad spellers of the world
untie!!!!

Geez… It's been a long, long, time… (2 years %%p since I've done much of

Memories …… da da dah da da da da …… sorry. By the way what is wrong
with being an ACAD nerd? Some of my best friends are computers, computer
geeks, and ACAD nerds. One day I'll write a song using Dimvars!! Really I like
3ds and animation much better but untill I am good enough ACAD will pay the
bills.

It depends on the type of model you have. If you want complex walls, with the
interior and all, use the floor plan in AutoCAD and extrude the lines to create
the appropriate walls. The doors and windows have to be done the same way, with
elev and thickness. On the other hand, if you have a simple box of a house,
with a lot of curved windows and doors, the best way is to create a polyline of
each wall (each elevation), send it to the Shaper in 3DS and use the Lofter to
extrude them. You have to assemble the house in the 3D Editor.
Roofs can be done in the following way: create a simple polyline in ACAD of
each part of the roof. Send DXF to 3D Editor and use vertex move to change the
roof into it's proper shape.

Hi,
I think I have it for the most part, (all the easy stuff) I have 3 skylights
and the backside of a roof that are not show in full in an elevation to figure
out but all goes well. I know the concepts behind what I am doing, now I just
need to sit down an do it. thanks for the info and don't go away I might need
more advice.
