Hello again Greg!
I've got a client that wants to do a series on where we are in the Universe for
a childrens show and wants to have an accurate view from earth of the stars.
He needs to be able to show the Big Dipper and recognizable constelations from
the earth view then wants to fly out to the solar system. Making the Planets
isn't really a big problem except if you happen to know of some source for maps
of the planets allready in existance that would help. Our current problem is
getting the stars to "Look right" from earth as we fly out to the solar system
and beyond.
Any Ideas?? Sources??

Hello James: The "Solar System" in your message got my attention. I'm currently
making a CD-ROM product for realistic visualization of the Earth and (in
future) the solar system. This will be for both adults and children, will use a
100MB+ texture map of the planet and will be rendered as a flic file and
converted to our compressed format for interactive viewing. We currently use a
simple star field since right now that is not too important. However, making
your own acurate solar system and star field would be the obvious solution but
perhaps too time consuming. If you come up with any great star field ideas let
me know. Our compression and real-time player software is available in the

The coordinates of the most important stars, nebulas etc. should be
available from various sources across the Internet or on PD CD-ROMs.
I have a program called "Skyplot fur Windows" (which is not PD), which uses
these coordinates to display the sky layout at various places/times. You
might contact the author Frank Thielen at Fax (+49) 261 72944 about getting
his data files.

I'm sorry, you'll have to bear with me on this but I don't have access to
Internet. Could you also explain what a "PD" CD-ROM is? I've lost my
handy dandy book of acronyms. <g>

PD is short for "Public Domain". A PD CD-ROM is one that hold 'the 500 best
of multimedia' etc., e.g. lots of PD and Shareware.
You may try the "Space & Astronomy" CD-ROM (available from Walnut Creek
CD-ROM (800-786-9907, internet:orders@cdrom.com, $39.95).

As I said you have to contact the author on how and whether to use his
files. As I understand it, the coordinate files are simple ASCII. They might
be formatted as a CAD system script file (is there a scripting in 3DS?) and
used to generate a 3D sphere with little spheres. They also might be used to
create a 2D bitmap texture.

Also, remember that the Pyros/Grubba SUNPATH IPAS will locate all the planets
relative to your location/time-of-day!

I'd forgotten I had this Routine!!
I've just grabbed the book now and this appears as if it will be very helpful.
Although I haven't tried this yet it appears as if we will be able to plot our
Planets paths out to the Keyframer and be 100% accurate!

As I'm not an Astronomer I need all the help I can get.
I'm sure my client will also be interested in purchasing this routine!
So much for the Planets.
Now what to do for the Constelations, and going outside our solar system?
