I am curious…I just installed a ATI pro turbo 4MB and have noticed significant slowdown on loading and swithcing between materials editor and main display…any ideas as to why this is happening. Am using 16MB 486DX2-66 Jeff

I agree I just upgraded from a 32bit ATI ultra pro to a 64bit ultra pro, and it is much, much slower switching between screens.

There is a problem with the vibrant drivers… they are working on the problem, and the fix should be out in about two weeks. Todd Manus

YEAH, I've been awaiting this fix for a while! No more delays. Hooray, Vibrant! Mitch

>There is a problem with the vibrant drivers… they are working on the >problem, and the fix should be out in about two weeks. > Where did you get this from Todd? We HAVE been looking at the problem, but I wasn't aware we announced any 'fix' time for this? I don't think it'll make 1.0.4… Chuck Walbourn – Vibrant Graphics

Why……you did Chucky, I called and was told by a technican that the fix would be out in two weeks, but never mind that…..Vibrant claims to get new drivers periodically out every 8 weeks, so you are due to have drivers released soon anyway….. By the way, I am a registered user of Liquid Speed, and a good customer, I didn't appreciate the tone of your message…. Todd Manus

Yes we are working a release. No, I am not aware that we were planning on having it fixed and out in two weeks. I said we were TRYING to get something out, but I do not set the schedule and the priorities change a lot around here. I was curious as to WHO at Vibrant said the fix would be out in 2 weeks for ATI Mach 64? > >By the way, > >I am a registered user of Liquid Speed, and a good customer, I didn't >appreciate the tone of your message…. I am not sure what you mean by this, but I am sorry if I offended you. My tone was mostly of shock at this being announced. I am the Engineer in charge of the driver–although not the drawcode–and I know that my current Beta versions of 1.0.4 DO NOT include the ATI Mach64 fix. I have been pushing for it for sometime, but I do not know when it will be released from the draw-code group. Chuck Walbourn – Vibrant Graphics

Greg, Have you also experiencing any loss of sync from going from materials to main? Jeff
#117865From: Greg BickAug 11, 1994 11:01 PM
hmm.. don't know what you mean by "loss of sync". I'm glad the drivers will be arriving soon, its REALLY anoying doing test renders!

Greg, What happens is I have the main display at 1280x1024x256 and the materials at 1024x768x16M when I go from one to tthe other the image is shrunk… You mention drivers what drivers will be arriving soon? Jeff P.S. The vibrant drivers for the ATI Pro Turbo only do 1024x768x16M and less whilst the adapter will do 1152x800x16M it is a matter of 256 pels but I like taking advantage of the adapter. Besides the sync rate at 16M colors is different than that of 1280…

It is normal for the monitor to adjust between screens, but it used to do it quickly.
#118141From: Jeff BakstAug 13, 1994 7:47 PM
Greg, Yes I can understand going from one sync rate to another…it takes about 10-12sec to do this. I have notices also that 3DS takes about 45sec to load since I started using this adapter…you have similiar problems? Regards, Jeff

Jeff, I also have a ATI Pro w/4Mb(PCI) in a Pentium 90Mhz w/32Mb. The Video Card takes 44 secs for 3DS to load up and 15-20 sec to display a rendered image. When I put in a Phantom 32i (ET4000/w32i and PCI) it takes 10 secs for 3DS to load up and 1sec to display a image after it has been rendered. I'm using the phantom till the ATI driver situation is corrected. DAK

David, If it takes 44s to load on a Pentium-90 and it takes about 45s to load on my 486DX2-66 then it must be the driver…or 3DS…has anyone know why this is so? I am contemplating on a 66Mhz pentium with PCI…I would get a 90 but DEC is the only bax that has EISA and PCI. Why EISA well…the Truvision cards are EISA…no PCI or VESA…albeit I think the MAtrox illimintor card is a ISA so what to do…I need a frame buffer with support for output to video. Jeff

>>why so slow, do anyone know?… I believe Gus G. mentioned that he surfed the code and found Vibrant was making hundreds of unneeded calls to the boards VESA BIOS. He has made Vibrant aware of the problem. JKJ

There are a couple of EISA/PCI P5/90 boxes on the market. There's DEC and ALR, and also a company called AIR manufactures an EISA/PCI P5/90 motherboard. It sounds like a really nice one, but is on back order since they just released in a couple of weeks ago. I havn't heard how it works with 3DS. John Tissavary (LUNA cie, inc)

John, AIR EISA…will look into that manufacturer…have been using AMI and Micronics need to know if it is USA made or import. Jeff

>> …I would get a 90 but DEC is the only bax that has >> EISA and PCI. PMJI, but a retorical question for you. I am looking in Computer Shopper (Aug. 1994, p.258) where there is a large ad for Royal Electronics. They have a system that looks very nice from the description and comes with a) Pentium-90 b) 5-EISA & 3-PCI bus mastering slots c) 16 MB RAM (192 MB max) d) ATI mach64 PCI e) 21" Digital Viewsonic Royal Electronics has not been mentioned here, as far as I know. This makes me wonder if there is a problem with the products from them. They have several systems, some with EISA and some with ISA (with PCI slots also). Am interested in anyones comments regarding Royal. I am not buying but I cannot resist looking <g>.

Albert: I bought my computer about a year ago from Royal. I've had two problems: 1. The SCSI card which came with the system has a connector for SCSC-2 but it is a configuration for which I have yet to find a cable. It is not the typical 50 pin SCSI-2 but a miniature centronics connector. I've been trying to track down a cable or a converter to allow me to connect to typical SCSI devices. Black Box doesn't make one, Redmond doesn't have it in their catalog and nobody in my local area has a clue. It has been difficult to get a response from Royal. 2. The UPS boys were warming up for the World Cup by kicking my CPU around like a soccer ball. I returned the unit and got a prompt return. Bob

Jeff, I recently upgraded to a pentium 90 /64 mb with the ATI mach64PCI, a and yes it does take 45 secs – 1min to load and a long time to switch to the rendering screen. I have gotten in the habit of hitting the space bar as soon as I render so that by the time the screen switching sync etc.. is taken care of the image has started rendering(sometimes finished :^) ) However, there is one good point to be made of the mach 64.. It is blazing fast for screen redraws and general mesh handling in the editors. BTW -can't wait for the real time shaded mode in 3ds v4!!! Greg

>>the screen switching sync etc.. is taken care of the image has started rendering(sometimes finished :^) )>> Really? It has been my observation that my system is completly locked (does nothing) untill the screen mode changes are finished. That is the main reason it pi**es me off so much. Every time I toggle to my rener screen and v/v I loose about four seconds. -Mitch

Greg, Yes I am also waiting for R4 and the realtime support…as I mentioned in a previous message…does anyone know why 3DS is doing what it is doing in taking so long to init? Regards, Jeff
#118618From: John TissavaryAug 16, 1994 4:15 PM
It's not 3DS, it's the Vibrant drivers making repetetive calls to the ATI's bios. Gus Grubba determined this, you may want to ask him for elaboration. John Tissavary (LUNA cie, inc)
