If you're converting the images through PhotoShop before printing them, then
_PhotoShop_ is the last generator of the image, and not 3ds. Have you printed
other images from PhotoShop? Are they also oversaturated — as compared to the
way you see them on the PhotoShop screen? If so, it sounds like your monitor
gamma is not properly adjusted in PhotoShop. On the other hand, if the images
appear oversaturated in PhotoShop as well, you can always desaturate them
after-the-fact in PhotoShop, or (as Gary suggests) use less saturated colors in
the 3ds Materials Editor before rendering.

Could you offer any basics on how one goes about getting one's computer
monitor, video monitor, and printed output to have the same appearance? I
could really use some insight here.

What you've asked opens a whole can of worms. Basically, it helps to have your
software (each image program you're using) properly gamma-calibrated to the
monitor you're using so that an image in one program will look the same when
loaded into another. I don't have PhotoShop, so I don't know which command to
use to calibrate your monitor — though I suspect it must have one. (Maybe
someone else can jump in on this.) When it comes to getting your printed output
to sync with what you see on the computer monitor, trial and error seems to be
the best approach. Since monitors display color as illuminated light, while
paper displays color as reflected light, you're never going to get an exact
match. I've seen various software approaches to solving this problem (can't
remember their names, sorry), but I think experience is the solution.

I figured it would <G>. I can tweak my image processing and paint programs to
appear similarly since most have a screen gamma adjustment. To get the
computer monitor to match a print it sounds like trial and error whilst holding
a print next to the screen? Should I just print some color bars? Photostyler
comes with some added software now to correct gamma but I can't make heads or
tails of it. Thanks for your comments, I need to schedule a gamma tweaking
day.

Pick up a copy of RenderPrint. It allows up to 25 thumbnail images to be
printed on one sheet, with variations of brightness, contrast, or gamma. It
prints the setting at the bottom of each image so you can set your final print
to match the best test. Has plenty of other features as well.

BTW, I'm heading north for vacation starting 8/26 and could be passing by on

You could try getting PhotoStyler, as they incorporate the Kodak Precision
Color Management System. Basically, you tell it what printer you're printing
to (it comes with some printer configs, you have to buy other configs, called
Precision Transforms, from Kodak), what monitor (ditto) and what scanner you're
using, and it does the rest.
Unfortunately, I haven't been able to really profit from it yet (I'm looking
forward to Kodak releasing their PT's for the Fargo), but Ana & Jesus/Krazy
Images swear by it.
With the merger of Adobe and Aldus, maybe we'll see PhotoShop get KPCMS too.

I've got the KPCMS with Styler. As I said I can't make heads or tails of it
although its supposed to be so simple. Says alot about me I guess. 🙁 Where
has ANA been lately? Other than having the software come with the device how
does one get PT's for various printers? No doubt the Kodak forum? I'm off to
the record store to check for the Barenaked Ladies latest. I'll let you know
what I find.

Yeah, Kodak. You may be able to purchase some from Aldus — at least, that was
the impression given me ina convo I had w/ one Kodak guy. I've got a number
for them (Kodak) around here somewhere, but if you're in a rush, Dave Stinnett
gave the number to me.

The Barenaked Ladies' second effort is not as rowdy as their first. There are
some rockin' tunes but no "King of Bedside Manner." The lyrics are good and
humorous but as per 'Gordon' will take quite a few listens to catch all of the
nuances. My first take is that I'm disappointed but we are talking relative
terms here.

PS As far as the color/gamma correction I'm not in a hurry but I need to map
out the strategy for getting all monitors and output devices color synced.
Things will start becoming critical when we take delivery on a few new color
output devices next month.

We are replacing a Calcomp color electrostatic with two Encad Novajets and
we're picking up a Canon Fiery processor to tie in with the Canon bubblejet
copier. We haven't completely settled on a dye-sub but the Tektronix Phaser is
currently the favorite.

FYI, Tektronix has a new dye-sub printer, the Phaser 440 (for
letter-extra, w/full-bleed 8.5 x 11). Of course, for 11×17 full-bleed, you'd
need the Phaser 480.

I'm betting you can get printer transforms for the Fiery and the Tektronix. The
Tektronix output I've seen is fabaroony.

I haven't printed out other images from Photoshop on the Iris but I have
created 5 by 4 transparencies from Targa files created within Studio .. they
seemed to come out fine .. hence my surprise. I'll experiment some more with
Photoshop.
