>>this hokey copy protection<<
I agree! I have had it happen on a friday evening and was unable to use
program for days. Then I decided to take them up on the hardware key for
several of my programs and guess what?…It killed one of my software keys! To
fix that they gave me a new software key for the broke one but I have to run it
on my slave machine. Major inconvenience! I understand the need for piracy
protection but I think peer pressure is the way to go.
Now I'm no saint mind you…but I have NOT used any software I am not licensed
for in over six years. Further I tell all associates and contacts my view on
the subject, leaving them to listen to the voice of "Jiminie Cricket".

Bill, I'm glad to see that there are others that think the way that I do about
companies imposing their secret password and hardware junk into my lawfully
acquired and paid-for system. It's becoming extremely oppressive and
unworkable. I think they should be called to task when they come around
hawking their software.

At road shows and user group meetings, I've seen lots of vendors "called to
task" regarding whatever CP scheme they've chosen. But I've never seen a user
group put a pirating member on the block for flogging… The flip side of
developers trying to protect their software is the casual attitude towards
piracy taken by the average computer user.

I was thinking of offering up the guy who sat across the table from me at the
Autodesk Party at SIGGRAPH. He was a university professor no less and he was
describing how he had cracked copies of 3DS which he gave to his prized
students. Of course he instructed them never to make copies. He made me so
sick I left the table. Thats what I get for sitting with strangers and trying
to meet people.
Personally, I think Schrieber's method is a deterent to even an initial
purchase let alone piracy. However, I think some form of Copy Protection is a
good thing. Dongles are the least offensive and troublesome to me but that
isn't saying a whole lot. I'm wishing that there is a better way.

My favorite piracy story involves a venture capitalist who'd taken over a
company I'd worked for… we spent an entire morning discussing copy
protection, and how we might implement it in a software package, and all the
pros and cons. At the end of the meeting, we needed to approve a few minor
office expenditures, including a new text editor for two programmers. Venture
Capital Bozo says "Why don't we just buy one and make a copy of it?" Just
another wasted morning. His argument was, If I buy one copy, it's mine and I
can do with it as a please. He couldn't make the connection to the morning's
discussions.
Keep meeting strangers! You never know where it will lead. Benevolence goes a
long way.
>>lost lock…
The Schreiber thing got me on a Saturday afternoon on a holiday weekend. I
had to wait till Tuesday to get a new code. I did not get my project done.
I was not happy.
In the future, I will certainly exhaust ALL other avenues before buying
another Schreiber program.
If they are going to continue to use such a scheme, my suggestion is to
provide uninterrupted service such as 1) automatic password protected key
thru their BBS, or 2) 24-hour touch-tone phone service (enter your personal
code, your keycode, and get a generated voice key over the phone.)

(PS. You might want to accumulate all these messages and send them directly
to Schreiber)
John,
Doesn't look like we have to worry about it anymore. Definitely an
improvement.
