I am enjoying my Emplant sys. tremendously. I would like to ask for some
advice on maximizing the Mac emulation speed.
I have an A2000 with GVP 040 @33, 16 MB of ram and 2 MB chip ram, Picasso
II with 2 MB, 2 internal HD's. However I have the Mac system and files on
a 150MB removeable external Iomega. Also have an Apple CD-ROM running thru
Emplant SCSI.
I have free 32 bit memory set to +/- 11 MB's, am using all 32-bit memory,
and have the device buffer set to 120. I am using one of your pre-set
Picasso video drivers (640×480) (didn't try to make a custom one) allowing
me 256 colors in the Mac system. I left Task Control Options at the
defaults with 32-bit address mode.
Do you have any advice on whether or not I am getting the most speed
out of the emulation? Would it run faster if I used an internal HD
for the Mac partition instead of the Iomega?
Would appreciate any advice you could give me!

About the only thing you could do is to increase the amount of
RAM for the device buffer to the 256k max. That may improve
performance at the margin for i/o, but it won't likely make a major
difference. There's really little you can do other than move up to
an '040. Emplant is pretty efficient at running right at the limits
of what the cpu is capable of doing. Basic benchmarks usually rate
the emulator near its equivalent Mac. The major exceptions will be
in video and floppy drive performance, which are generally slower
than the equivalent Mac.
As for hard drive performance, obviously a faster hard drive is better
than a slow one regardless of the target hardware. If you run the Iomega off
the Emplant scsi, you can improve performance by running it as an Amiga device
of the Amiga scsi if your scsi card provides higher throughput than the
Emplant's scsi. The Emplant's scsi isn't exactly slow, but it isn't as fast as
a good scsi card in the Amiga.

Thanks for your help. I do indeed have a GVP '040 @ 33. However I will
try increasing device buffer.
At present, I have an Apple 300 cd-rom connected to an a/b switcher.
Switch a goes to Emplant SCSI allowing me to run cd-roms on the Mac
side, with Iomega connected to GVP SCSI. Iomega is also connected to
the switcher so that switch b connects cd-rom to Iomega giving me
cd-rom access on the Amiga.
Given this config., can I run the Iomega on Emplant scsi and still access
cd-rom and not lose any speed?

More than likely if you run the drive off the Emplant's scsi
you will see a sight decrease in speed because the GVP scsi is much
faster. It really depends on whether the drive is capable of greater
throughput than the Emplant scsi can handle. If not, it won't make
much difference. Sounds to me like you have nothing to be concerned
about. You are likely getting the most out of your system and the
Emplant. I'd leave well enough alone as long as it's working well
for you.
