ATI Pro Turbo M64 ISA
11 messages in this thread
I recently purchased an ATI Pro Turbo Mach 64 2m VRAM ISA card (not
received yet, 30 day return policy). ATI assured me that Vibrant had working
3DSr3 drivers supporting all resolutions available for the card. Before I start
installing, can you verify this claim? Thanks in advance.

Heck, I'm just talking to you about this EVERYwhere!<g>
As I understand Gus Grubba's messages, the Vibrant stuff supports the ATI
mach64, but there is a problem (with the Vib drivers) that causes hundreds
(thousands?) of repetitive calls to the BIOS, thus taking minutes for it to
initialize some modes. Obviously, somebody'll be looking at it.

Hey David,
I wonder what the record is for starting, and keeping active, multiple
threads in multiple forums!<g>
I must have missed the thread with Master Grubba's messages. The card, I
hope, will still be faster in 3DS than the card I'm currently using. And in
WinDOZE there's still all those nasty GPF's in X (@$#%&%!) 2 I'm hoping to
squash (not to mention being able to draw a curved line at any speed) <g>. When
the updated 3DS Vibrant drivers materialize from the mist it'll be a good day.
Thanks again for the info.

ATI has informed me that the driver to fix the annoying Mach64 delays is ready
and that you should contact Autodesk to get it—– I am going to peek around
and requst it right after this—– good luck–

Can you please inform me as to who at ATI told you this, as our contacts at
ATI have not heard of any fix? We would like to be aware of any such fix.
We supply Autodesk with regular updates–we just sent 1.0.4 to them for
testing–but we have not made any fix specific to the Mach64 to reduce or
eliminate the delays (we did add ISA support for the Mach64).
We currently believe that the problem resides in the ATI BIOS, which we
call twice on each module switch. However, be aware that 3D Studio opens
and closes each module on startup. We do not make any VESA calls directly
when configured for ATI Mach64.

Here's a copy of the letter ATI e-mailed me a few days ago (dated thursday
August 18)—- They seem to contend that the problem is with the driver
and not the card—- They had a similar delay(very long one at start-up)
with WIn3.11 which has since been fixed by a new driver so I'm hoping that
the same is possible with 3D Studio—- I really get tired of companies
pointing the finger at everyone but themselves so if they are apparently
doing this please let me know– I have hounded them for over two months
about this problem- and so have many others– and still no fix and no real
answers except that its a vibrant driver problem.
Thank You for any and all help in this matter

Here is the letter from ATI Customer support here on Compuserve Aug, 18
Doug,
This information is new as of today.
ATI's mach64 drivers for 3D Studio have been developed by Vibrant and
according to them, have been shipped to Autodesk for distribution. Drivers
for the ISA based mach64 have been delayed but are expected within the next
month.
ATI will not be carrying this support on this forum on on the ATI Download
BBS systems. We suggest you contact Autodesk to aquire this driver, either
though their CompuServe forum or though the AutoDesk BBS systems.
More information will be posted here and in the file DRVRPT.TXT as it
becomes available.

Matthew

We have sent an updated 1.0.4 driver to Autodesk for QA and distribution
with Release 4 as well as to customers via CompuServe. The 1.0.4 driver
includes support for the ISA Mach64, which was recently completed. The
'delay problems' have not yet been resolved as we are still of the belief
it is in the ATI BIOS–if there is a work-around, we are not aware of it.
Tim Little, our draw-code guy working on the ATI Mach64 support, will be
posting a technical response here sometime soon.
Thanks. I hope this delay problem is resolved soon myself, but if it isn't
something we can fix with changes to the software, then there isn't much we
can do about it.

Thanks Chuck—- I wait then for ATI to fix its buggy BIOS, they found a way
past the initial delay to WFW and cut the start-up load time by more then half
so that may be a good area to check on—- that fix was driver related—-
Please let me know of any knews on this subject for I like the cards speed but
the delays are horrible—– I warn others to check with ATI on this problem
before they spend the money——-

We will continue to look into this and see if we can at least help out some, if
possible.

Chuck,
Appreciate the info on this. I think I'll put a hold on my order
(fortunately the card was back ordered) until I hear more from Tim Little or
from ATI.
