#Flat Figures in 3DStudio

Can anybody help me?
I am trying to produce drawings with flat human figures (which we have been
scanned in) within 3D. I cannot simply get the outline of the human figure from
the scanned in picture. Can anybody help?
Thanks
Sanjay
Sanjay,
there's a couple of ways to do this:
1) in 3d Studio set up the scan as a background image in the 3d editor, go to
the 2d shaper and turn on view background. You should see a proxy grayscale
version of the scan. You can the manually draw it with the freehand or line
tools.
2) If you have Corel Draw they have an autotrace module which will attempt to
automatically trace the image. You can then export this as an .ai file which
3ds' 2d shaper can load. There's usually some cleanup required.
If the figures are fairly simple I'd go with option 1. If they are quite
intricate I'd consider 2.

Apologies for the delay in replying…
…but your suggestion worked an almighty beauty!!
(now to see if I can really produce a work of art)….
Many thanks for your help!!

Do you actually need a mesh the exact shape of the scanned image? Could you use
the texture map and an opacity map (the same image but in black and white) to
achieve the same result?

I usually do this by creating a special opacity map in a paint program. I just
select the background (usually this is easy if it is pure black or blue or
something.) Then I make all these areas black (transparent in 3ds). I invert
the selection set and make the rest pure white (opaque in 3ds). Then I use
this mask as the opacity mask. I just have to map the material (with the
person as the texture map) onto a plane that I usually create by getting a
shape from the 2-D shaper. I hope that this help.
