This might be a dumb question, but will 3ds max work with Windows 3.1 or only with Windows NT. Also, will there be a special version for Win 95 (I thought I saw mention of something called 3ds Classic). Thanx Neil 102226,3566

MAX will only work with NT. I don't know about WIN95 and CLASSIC though. Hope this helps, Jason

Neil, 3DS R4 _*IS*_ 3DS Classic. 3DS MAX is intended only for NT. If Microsoft is able to support NT applications under Win95, then you MIGHT be able to run it then. Kevin Krell – Computer Support Associates

I thought that MS made some kind of a rule that any software to be developed for WinNT has to be compatible with Win95. Besides, the screenshots of MAX looks like Win95, not only 3DStudio but the Taskbar and Start menu and all. 🙂

>>I thought that MS made some kind of a rule that any software to be developed for WinNT has to be compatible with Win95.<< That would be impossible. The WinNT API includes functionality that is not in the Win95 API. >>the screenshots of MAX looks like Win95<< MS is porting the Win95 look to NT. This would probably be a beta or some such. Pictures of it have appeared in magazines, so some people are getting to play with it. Considering the schedule of MAX, they would have been poorly served to develop for the 3.x look interface and a terse memo to MS should be all they need to get support for NT95.

Not everything is there and it is a little buggy. The NT 3.6 release will ship toward the end of the year with the full Win95 shell. The shell is on the MS ftp site.

The Shell is pretty buggy as you said and is sluggesh on my Dell 486Dx 66 with 16MB. On my Alpha 233 at home it ran pretty well but I will wait until the full product. Will

Thanks for the shell info. MSDN-CD just came in. My drive is dead for now, but I'd suspect that it's on that too. The July discs. I'm not too concerned though until I get MAX. patience….

The Win95 shell is also available here on Compuserve (GO MSDN). Note that there are versions of this shell for Intel, PowerPC, Alpha and MIPS processors (while Win95 is only available for Intel processors). JSH

<< The Win95 shell is also available here on Compuserve (GO MSDN). >> Just for the clarification, Jeff. It's GO MSDR. Mark

<<I thought that MS made some kind of a rule that any software to be developed for WinNT has to be compatible with Win95.>> I think that it's the other way around, software built for 95 must run on NT.

>I think that it's the other way around, software built for 95 must run on NT.< That's not 100% true anymore though. 🙁 I believe MS dropped that for some areas, probably mainly games.. I could be wrong though. (picked this up in WinNT forum a while back) JNJ

It is the other way around. Win95 apps must be able to run on NT in odrer to get the Win95 logo on the box. Will

I'm not so sure about that. But I thought that MS made some kind of a rule that any software to be developed for NT has to work on Win

Kevin, >> If Microsoft is able to support NT applications under Win95, then you MIGHT be able to run it then. << I think this is the key. I sure hope that Autodesk does not "cripple" max to provide WIN95 support, and I can't imagine them doing so. However, if the shipping product will indeed run under '95, it could only be a real boon to Autodesk. Chuck Mies Computer Services

Kevin During the release of R4 the rumor factory here on C$erve decided that r4 was going to cost a mint and that the little guy would be forced out because the total upgrade package (plugins) was going to cost a mint. With r5's release i can see the r4 paranoia as being a little premature. Now the question is can the small office still afford the max up grade or is max aimed at the same market that coughs up $10-40k for apps. Gary
