#3DS IPAS book

I bought "3D Studio IPAS Plug-In Reference" book published by New Rider
Publishing directly from the publisher. The book has a CD-ROM disk. I thought
that the disk contained working versions of IPAS plug-ins but they were demo
versions. I don't know how to install and try out the IPAS plug-ins because
there was no instructions on installing them. Will someone please help me?

you could start by installing them into the c:\3ds4\process directory.
depending on the type of plug-in you access it from one of the four 3ds
modules, I'm sure the book explains tha! I hope…
is it like a catalog? or does it go into details once you have them installed?

I recieved my book today and the demos seem to be in the _demos directory. For
example: I pulled up the vortex3d dir and it had a print out of complete
instructions on installing and operating the ipas routine. I would imagine most
of the others are set up the same way, I've only had about 1/2 hour to browse
the book and it looks awesome – have fun!!!!!

IPAS routines are for 3D Studio, I'm not sure what relation they would have
with AutoCAD. I am very happy with the book, I just happened to hit a decent
contract job when I was starting with 3D Studio about a year ago and I invested
in all the Yost IPAS along with some from Digimation – the fact that there are
so many available the IPAS book is excellent reference to go along with the
actual manuals. There are so many IPAS I have not had a chance to work with
yet, this book gives me more detail on exactly what these IPAS can do for me.

Dear Paul, When I tried to install the Civil Detailor program, it asked me if I
have AutoCAD R11 or R12 but not R13. I tried out 3D Paint program but it didn't
let me save anything to disk. I looked at and played animations created by the
publisher of the program that applies laws of physics to objects. Jeffrey.

I'm sorry if we weren't clear about installation of the demo programs. The
installations vary from vendor to vendor. The simpler programs are installed
by copying the *.?XP (AXP, KXP, PXP, SXP, BXP) files into your process
directory. The more complex programs have their own INSTALL.EXE or INSTALL.BAT
programs in their individual directories. Most of them come with DOC files
that explain the installation. The demo programs are provided as-is from the
vendors and NRP has no control over the installation process. Most of the
programs are demo versions others are shareware, freeware, or public domain.
Many of the demo versions are convertable demos.

That is real strange because that is exactly where I got my copy of the
book. That was months ago though, and they did order it for me and had it in
a couple of days.
I guess Digimation is your best bet, or let your fingers do the walking <g>

Weird. I've tried to order twice and they said it was a "no go" both times. I
order other books there w/o problems fairly often.
Looks like Digimation is the ticket.
BTW: Muchos congrats on Virtuosity!!! Can't wait to see it!
Any chance we could get you to bring some stills and some inside scoops to a
NC 3DS User Group meeting sometime soon?

It should work with r13 if you tell if you are using r12. If you cannot get it
to work call Schreiber (now called 4DVision).

Yes, many of the programs on the CDROM are demos. Some of them are convertable
(meaning that they can be converted to full working copies with a security
code). I don't remember what the status is of the Meshpaint demo. There should
be a readme with it.

Most r12 lisp programs work fine in r13. If these do not then you may need to
contact 4DVision (Schreiber) at 800.252.1024.

Dear Terry, The files for AutoCAD are *.EXP and *.MNU files and the files for
3D Studio are *.PXP files. I tried to compile the menus but I got an error
message saying "ACADR12.LSP not found". AutoCAD R13 has ACADR13.LSP file. I
tried the *.PXP files in 3D Studio but no matter how I set the options in the
dialog boxes, they create only one type of objects. For example, setting
options in the TRANSIT TRACKS dialog box should create different kind of tracks
but it created only one kind of track. The dialog boxes ignore the PATH.LFT
file that I created and the fences are created in spiral path as if they were
coil spring. Jeffrey.

My time with AutoCAD is getting pretty hazy and I don't think that I can really
help you with this. If you contact the vendor: 4DVision (formerly Screiber
Instruments) they can help you set this up. Their number is: 800.252.1024

help you install the demo program properly without it costing you.

While we're on the subject, can you tell me if this book is srictly a "buyers
guide" or if it has tips on using popular IPAS routines? If the latter is
true, could you give me some insight on how in-depth it is?

It is intended as a reference for selecting an IPAS product. This can be used
to help in a product purchase or to determine which product to use from your
own tool chest. Each product has an interface/screen shot(s), a list of the
controls/parameters that control a plug-in's behavior, and a descriptive review
of the product. Where appropriate we provided sample output images that
illustrate a range of possible effects and the settings used to produce those
effects. We tried to include sample project files and vp files on the CDROM to
give you a starting point.
Some products could be covered in half a page. Others took 4-5pages. The
primary aim was to show you what each plug-in could do and what controls you
have.

It is a very good book, Mitch, trust me.
When Terry was writing it he never used any help from the authors
of IPASes: it means he was able to figure out how this 200+ plug-ins work
(if he could, you will be able too, espessialy with the manuals)
and rendered some pretty screens with with them
and in addition explained every single element of their interfaces.
Take into account that this book covers practically every IPAS without any
BIAS.
You will get very useful and complete encyclopaedia of plug-ins,
which will trigger your desire to buy couple of dynamics modules, coupled
with some amazing fractal SXPs and some unique videopost IXPs.

how long does it take to deliver it?
My local bookstores told me that it takes approximataly 6 weeks to get it and I
don't like waiting…
To order it, can someone give me Digimations or NRP's FAX Number cause calling
the USA isn't funny from germany and the 800 number doesn't work.
