Kevin At release 4 the rumor mill predicted (unjustly) an upgrade price which would bring the small bussiness users to their knees! Didn't know about the Bspline modeler<G> Now at the release of Max, I'm wondering if the small business guys were a little premature……r5 is HERE! Don't say it's gonna be free<G> but please let it not be a reinvestment(ulp!) Any word? Gary

Hi Gary, <<…r5 is HERE! ..>> MAX does not equal to R5. If anything MAX is considered R1. Dos 3DS will have a life of it's own, so there may be a DOS R5 in the future. So…MAX will be here! (remember, we're still in alpha.) jonas[adesk]

Jonas I see! r4 then r5. at Max's release(r1) will the upgrade choices be simple choices based on the tight hardware requirements of NT and our specific work environment (and normal upgrade costs) or will upgrade be a question of reinvesting an all new product in order to stay on board? Gary

Gary, Note that there are now 2 product managers for 3D Studio. Bob Bennett moves over to handle MAX, and Brent Blackett takes over 3D Studio DOS. The migration cost from 3DS R4 to MAX is $995 (after MAX ships). Reservations made before MAX ships will be $495. Users of 3DS R1, R2 & R3 must upgrade to R4 level first, then pay the migration fee. Any plug-in upgrades are the responsibility of their manufacturers. Kevin Krell – Computer Support Associates

Hi Kevin, Who and by when does one contact for the pre-release NT option? (If your firm is an option, please drop me an E-mail note) Thanks, jhg

Hi Jonas, PMJI But ! The last time something like this happened ( with ani studio ) you chaps in the USA said something along the lines of " September … Autodesk anounces ani studio …. those people who purchase ani pro between now and shipping of ani studio will be able to upgrade for $150 everyone else who already has ani pro already will have to pay , I think it was $295 " Now I dont want to bitch but that comment was only valid for the US, nothing was mentioned in the original posting about that but when I called Autodesk UK I was told that that was the case and the cheapest I could upgrade would be equivalen to the $295…. So my question is will the rest of the world be able to cross grade at the $495 pre release price or are we gonna get persecuted again ? I like Autodesk products (on the whole) but I'm getting thorougly fed up with the HUGE markup that you guys put on you products when you ship them over here, according to my sources the current price or Acad R13 in the US is $3,750 on CD and $3,995 on disk Whilst 3D Studio R4 sells for $2,995. Over here Acad R13 costs the same on disk or CD at $4,725 whilst 3D Studio sells for $3,975, these are based on $1.5 to 1 pound sterling the ratees are closer to 1.55 to 1 but I'll be nice and allow for currency variations and fluctuations. I accept that there will be a small cost overhead for shipping, and in the case of Acad I believe the European and US versions still differ slightly, but why does 3DS cost nearly 33% more over here ? And why do we never seem to get the upgrade offers that the US gets ? Other software companies, Corel for example convert fairly accurately their US prices to UK prices according to a reasonable exchange rate so why dont Autodesk ? I appreciate that you probably dont have any say in how Autodesk markets its products worldwide, but you probably know someone who does and could pass the message on. Please forgive the ranting and raving but I've had a rough week and I'm just waiting to here you tell me that the UK will have to pay $1500 no other options when MAX eventually ships over here, probably 3 months after the US knowing the usuall waiting time ! David <In a Huf> Orf P.S. Can you find out if there will be any demos of MAX here in the UK and if so where in the next few months ?

Hi David, << .. I'm just waiting to here you tell me that the UK will have to pay $1500 no other options when MAX eventually ships over here, probably 3 months after the US knowing the usuall waiting time ! >> International pricing is determined by the local Autodesk offices and *not* by us in America. I'm sorry but I cannot speculate on the UK's pricing of MAX. jonas[adesk]

John, As Jonas says, he'll post the details as Autodesk would like them to read. Me – I pester my sales reps for the info, precisely so I can answer such questions with current data. Isn't that what a good dealer is supposed to do? Works fine, unless Autodesk re-groups and re-states. You can reserve a migration to 3DS MAX through your Autodesk Multimedia Reseller. Just give them your name, etc. You should not need to make any payment (deposit) until the product is actually being released. Kevin Krell – Computer Support Associates

Kevin, My mistake, I thought your firm was a reseller. I am not happy at all with the local firm that I bought 3DS from and thus I am looking for a better firm. As a single customer who has arranged over $20k in sales in the last 6 months for them, I demand service and they don't cut it. On the other hand, I get in a good mood very quickly when the topic shifts to my new Power Mac 8500 or the new Indigo2 on my desk at work <G>. Thanks for the suggestions, jhg

John, No mistake, we ARE a reseller. It's considered bad ettiquette, though, to troll the forum for customers, and I'm one of the first to jump on fellow dealers. So the politically correct response is to refer people to the Autodesk Referral #, or (maybe) hint that we're in Los Angeles and capable of handling local customers. Because most forum messages don't indicate where a user is located, we certainly don't want all dealers to shout at once, clamoring for your business. CSA limits itself (and per Autodesk contract) to the local Southern California area, except where a wider range is OK with our manufacturers, or no dealer services their area. Wish I could have sold you the Indigo2 <g>. Kevin Krell – Computer Support Associates

Apparently, the initals "B.B." are required to be a 3DS product manager…. I ponder the significance….<g> Dave

David, B.B. – Yeah, I'd noticed that. Kevin Krell – Computer Support Associates

Kevin, Can you please eloborate on the upgrade pricing? Do I understand you correctly: If I wish to upgrade my DOS R4 to 3DS MAX it will cost $495 if I request the upgrade soon, and $995 if I wait until after it ships? Thanks. -Mike.
#185385From: Jonas Ruikis [ADESK]Aug 16, 1995 10:02 AM
Hi Michael, << If I wish to upgrade my DOS R4 to 3DS MAX it will cost $495 if I request the upgrade soon, and $995 if I wait until after it ships? >> This is true in the Americas. International pricing is determined by the local Autodesk offices – not by us in America. We plan to show MAX in the UK at the Comp. Graphics Show in London in November. jonas[adesk]

Autodesk Multimedia Marketing is finalizing the entire 3D Studio MAX migration pricing plan now. We will send it to our dealers sometime around the beginning of September. I'll also post the relevant portions here for our customers. Please contact your nearest Autodesk International office for pricing outside the United States. Thanks. Kathy Clinton MM Marketing

Thanks, Jonas, for the info. It is hard for me to know if we *really* need to upgrade or not. It certainly seems like it would be hard to consider NOT upgrading, but until I can really see it personally, I am not comfortable making the decision…. Why is this strange offer being done? To pump up fourth quarter revenue? -Mike.

Hi Michael, << Why is this strange offer being done? >> I'm not sure what's strange in the offer, the fact that it's less expensive to upgrade before we ship or…? jonas[adesk]
#186479From: Michael BahrAug 22, 1995 7:03 AM
<I'm not sure what's strange in the offer, the fact that it's less expensive to upgrade before we ship or…?> The fact that it costs more to buy it after it ships. Seems strange, to me. I guess you *could* say it is a discount to users willing to commit now. The way my firm works, unfortunately, is that the higher cost may be viewed as a penaly to for upgrading later. This is because, we work on four quarter cash basis, as the end of the year comes closer, more and more restrictions are placed on spending. Especially this year (tough year). So, since we will not purcahse, probably, until into the first quarter, it costs us 2x as much to upgrade! But, you can bet I will make a case about the lower cost if we lock in our upgrade now. However, as I said in another message, I would like to see the product up and running before I commit, and your schedule may not allow this….. -Mike.

Hi, I am trying to find a dealer to support this upgrade scenario. I live in York, PA near Philadelphia. (Autodesk gave me a dealer nearby and they did not even know of MAX!). Can you help?
#186547From: Jason LangeAug 22, 1995 12:17 PM
Neither did my dealer! He wanted to know where I heard about MAX, I told him here, on Cserve. He knew nothing of it, let alone the $495 upgrade! He said he would look into it, and call me back, he hasn't called back yet and its been a week! Jason
#186554From: Jonas Ruikis [ADESK]Aug 22, 1995 12:29 PM
Hi Brian, << Dealer is unaware of upgrade policy..>> Adesk will be providing the dealerships with a full program outline in the September timeframe. Until then, you can relax since we have months yet to go and let us catch up to the dealers or feel free to give your local dealer the MAX info from the libs. Kathy Clinton posted a message regarding the dealer channel and the September time frame but the message has scrolled. jonas[adesk]
