From the info I've received on the Avid, I hear that many, if not all, of the
transitions are produced in real-time instead of having to be rendered. Is
this true? I know the Immix Video Cube's effects are in real time, but at this
time last year, Avid's effects took a very long time to render.

On Avid's Media Suite Pro, all effects must be rendered. This is their $25,000
system. Their more expensive system Composer, which I believe sells for
somewhere in the neighborhood of $80,000. Anyway, this system will do effects
in real time.
The effects have not taken that long to render on the Avid system I have been
using. A 30 frame disolve takes about one minute and five seconds. Most of the
slow motion and reverse motion effects have just taken about 2 to 3 minutes.
The system allows you to batch these effects so that you could do them all at
one time, such as at night – after hours.
