#Tablet in 3DS – HOW
16 messages in this thread
I am trying to set up a Wacom Tablet to work in 3DS – I load the DOS
driver instead of the mouse driver – but it is dead in 3DS.
Judy
Judith, I'm setting up a Wacom 12×12 next week. A friend set his up a few weeks
ago and said that he left his setting in 3-DS as MOUSE, and 3-DS sees his Wacom
as a mouse, no problem… he loves it. If you still have a problem I'll call
him and ask specifics. Jeffrey
Thanks – for the info.
I am using the WACOM Art-Z not the big 12×12 – I wonder if that is the problem.
Judy
I don't think the palatte size is the problem. Know lots of folks with either
the 8×8 or 12×12. did you try having 3-DS see it as a mouse? Jeffrey
hi Judy: Well, I got my 12×12 Art-Z. Runs in 3-DS and Ani-Pro fine in DOS. When
you installed did you put a line in your autoexec.bat that installs the DOS
drivers? The only problem I have is if I shell to Ani-Pro from Windows, the
stylus does not respond and provokes an ERROR. BTW, I loaded the WACOM DOS
driver high with no problem. Pressure sensitive in Painter is nice. Funny, many
long-term 3-DS users advised against stylus in 3-DS. I like it a lot. Very
accurate control of all functions and easy "right click". Hope you got your
conflict resolved. Jeffrey P.S. two minor additional observations – For Windows
I had to rem out reference to MOUSE drivers in the SYSTEM.INI [BOOT] and also
remove the previous reference Painter had made to OLDMOUSE.DRV, since I am now
mouseless. Photoshop runs fine but does not want to acknowlege pressure
sensitive???? jeffrey
Judy…..ARGH! I spoke too soon. Turns out that the 12×12 freaked in 3-DS after
I had terminated a session in Windows. This may be a problem with the newest
ARTZII, I don't know. I'll have to return it and look around for the previous
version (which does not have the erasar end). This was a buuuuumer, because it
functioned fine Windows Apps and in DOS in Ani-Pro. Just thought I would let
you know. Jeffrey
I finally got the ARTZ to function in 3DS – I had to load it with a relative
operand (WMOUSE /R) – Once I used the r operand it worked fine – but I still
prefer the mouse in 3DS – I had wanted to use it with MESHPAINT. Because of the
RELATIVE operand – I found the tablet awkward in 3DS especially with the
command line at the top of the scren.

Judy, Glad you got your ARTZ working. I may seem about half past crazy by now,
but I also got mine working, and it seems to function fine in Absolute Mode.
The only oddity is that after exiting windows i have to run the WTEST or I
freeze when going into 3-DS. Also, make sure Windows SEtup indicates No Mouse
or pointer device and that puts the proper line in your SYSTEM.INI file. there
were a few more subtle things so ask if you neeed to know more…. GAD. Well,
at least things are running again. Jeffrey
Thanks for the info. I too have to run WTEST to get it working in 3DS –
Judy
that little WTEST thing is odd. Seems like we have to re-establish the DOS
Driver over the Windows driver. Actually grateful to be down to such minor
esoterics. One bizarre thing left — Word for Windows 2.0 can't handle the
WACOM <LOL> so i'll just type everything in NOTEPAD or DOS EDIT. Two more tips
I picked up: 1) pen windows = penwin.dll in your SYSTEM.INI file causes
WRITE.EXE to become inoperable and that is documented in the readme file.
However, it says in the readme file you can remove it from the SYS file…
*NOT*. 2) When in DOS and launching a program, keep your stylus away from the
tablet. It can cause a data spool and crash the WACOM. If you pick up any hints
on your side pass them on. Gotta tell you, I had two really bad days trying to
work all this out— mostly due to bad WACOM documentation. Technology works,
Technology delivers 🙂 Jeffrey
Thanks for the tips!
About the only time I want to use the tablet in 3DS is when I use MeshPaint. I
am still getting used to the way the different mapping styles look when
unfolded.
Judy
MeshPaint is still on my "to buy" list. Obviously, there is a little hesitation
in further stocking my Plug-In Library, considering MAX will probably develop
Plug-Ins very quickly and we will need all that are not bundled that we
currently have PLUS some of the more irresistable ones that come along. I'll
just keep my reservations to myself and wait with optimism. On the original
string – Last night I ran a full session of 3-DS with WACOM in Absolute mode. I
like it. Now I just have to re-train my hands regarding all the programmed
macros, in fact, re-program many of the macros because my "real" drawing hand
is to my left 🙂 Jeffrey
I don't have that same problem as I am not going to MAX but am waiting for 3DS
v5.0 for DOS.
Judy
Jeffrey,
I've got a Kurta. Works fine in 3DS, but only in relative mode, and
I'd been told by Autodesk people that absolute tablet mode was not supported by
3DS
(that may have been R3). Does R4 allow absolute positioning? How did you do
this? If I could get the tablet into absolute, I wouldn't look so goofy waving
my arm back and forth to move and copy keys in the Track Info box of a long
animation (or would I..does that dialoge box respond to absolute?)
Dan, the WACOM ARTZII is functioning fine in absolute mode in 3-DS (no waving
of arms madly). Actually, it's really comfortable and a flick of the wrist puts
me up at the status line. Also, vertice editing, mesh pulling and all that
stuff feels like virtual sculpting. Jeffrey
I will have to try absolute mode – I don't care much for relative mode in 3DS.
