#input device
8 messages in this thread
I need to be able to monitor the keyboard at all times ( so I can use a
hot-key). From what I can get from the manuals, I need to add a handler to the
input device. First, I would like to know if this is the way to go about it.
And if it is, does anyone have a code sample of how to do it. I found several
examples but most are old and just hang the system. The others, like in the RKM
docs, are too specific. I have tried altering them but I can't make them work.
Any ideas or suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks, Jack
Jack,
to monitor the keyboard in a system conform way, you should make use of the
commodities.library (see ch. 31 of RKM `Libraries').
It does just what you asked for: it adds a handler into the input stream.
Of course you may program your own custom input handler (and have to if your
program has to be OS 1.3 downwards compatible) instead of going through the
overhead of commodities.library, but you may get evil side-effects if there is
other software doing just the same thing…

Thanks Werner. I am aware of the commodities library but I did want the
program to be 1.3 compatible. Thanks, Jack
what about a 1.3 & 2.04 version, patching the input.device on 2.04 is supposed
to be alot more tricky than it was under 1.3
I think it would put some users off as well, I know this sounds off, but
writing to 1.3 is a pain in the ass, and I prefer not to do it. When I write a
program, if it can work under 1.3, all well and good, if I have to spend a long
time, then it ain't worth it.
If you are going to support 1.3, what about 1.2, 1.1 & 1.0????

Someone I know still uses an A1000 in her work. She has no plans of updating
it and is waiting till there is a more secure future for the Amiga before
buying a new one. Normally I try to write most of my programs so that they
will run under 1.3 since it is a lot less forgiving than 2.0 when it comes to
programming mistakes. This allows me to develop more dependable programs.
Thanks for your concern though:)
surely if the software runs on 1.3 but not 2.04 then the software is still
bugged. The bugs just appear less often, but normally have bigger and more
impressive results. I suppose as long as it works its ok. Personally I would
upgrade the a1000 to 3.1 anyway, but then I am like that 🙂

Hi,
On one of the early fish disks there is a commodities.library. Seems the idea
is older but hadn't been successful until C= included it (enhanced ?) in WB
2.x. It's anywhere on my Goldfish 1 CD. At this time there was no 2.04 so it
works with 1.3. But I guess it is not as bug free as the C= Version.
