Have a friend running Photogenics that requires asl.library v.39 or newer to run. He's running ver 3.0 of AmigaDOS. Is there a newer OS for the amiga? I'm a PC guy so I don't have a clue as to what it is, but I do have Cserve access. Any help would be greatly appretiated! Bill

William, the last official version of asl.library is 38.36. It is supplied with Versions 2.1, 3.0 and 3.1 of the Amiga operating systems. There might be some inofficial newer Version I don't know of, so if Photogenics needs such a beast, it should be part of the Photogenics installation discs. – wkc – … via AP from Hamburg, Germany

Lepido, I apologize to spread wrong information. Your are right, version 39.4 of asl.library is on the 3.0 Workbench disk, and version 40.6 on the 3.1 Workbench disk. I had to know by checking the Autodocs_3.1/doc/asl.doc file, but I tried to get the version actually distributed on the Disks using the version command without the FILE option, which fooled me with wrong results. – wkc – … via AP from Hamburg, Germany

Werner: The asl.library I have is 40.6, so it seems like you have a 2.1 library for some reason. Maybe some nice program installed it your you <g>. // John – (TechnoJunkie at heart) \X/ jgager@BMI.NET

John, you are right of course. I mucked with the version command. On an OS 2.1 machine, I put the WB Disks of 3.0 and 3.1 into DF0: and typed version df0:libs/asl.library which gave me wrong results :-(. After typing version df0:libs/asl.library FILE I got asl 40.6 (7.5.93) for OS 3.1 and asl 39.4 (18.8.92) for OS 3.0. – wkc – … via AP from Hamburg, Germany

erm, I have version 40.6 of asl.library, it came with the 3.1 upgrade. I suspect that there was also a 39.x version as extra functionality was added at this point (to do with overscan, I just had a quick look at the autodocs and there was definately changes for v39 & v40). Phill

Philip, I know, I know… you are right of course. asl 40.6 (7.5.93) was distibuted with OS 3.1 and asl 39.4 (18.8.92) with OS 3.0. I made a mistake when checking the 3.0 and 3.1 Workbench Disks with the 'version df0:libs/asl.library' command in a 2.1 environment without the 'FILE' option – which gave me wrong results. I had to know better by checking the Autodocs_3.1/doc/asl.doc file, but I wanted to get the version actually distributed on the Disks. Shame on me! – wkc – … via AP from Hamburg, Germany

Yeah the version command can be a pain. Until the "FILE" option of course, the only way to find the REAL version number of a library was to type the contents in hex mode, very messy. Phill

Or, you could use WBVersion By Hakan Hellberg. I have it set in a dock so I just drop libraries or programs on it an get the $VER string out of it and displayed on the Workbench in a window. Hardly fails to extract the info. Alex… Net surfin' Autopilot 1.80

William, <Have a friend running Photogenics that requires asl.library v.39 or newer to run. He's running ver 3.0 of AmigaDOS. Is there a newer OS for the amiga?> Yes, there is OS 3.1 which uses version 40.6 of the asl.library. Your friend should be able to upgrade buy purchasing the OS from any reputable dealer or mail order house. Skimming through the Redwoods on AutoPilot Asha
