Am I really stupid, or is the 2gig partition limit mentioned nowhere in the
manual? I figured that since it was using a custom file system that limit
didn't apply, and now I'm kind of screwed, to say the least. 🙁

I only have a 1.7 gig drive so I never ran into that problem. I believe it
is related to the OS's rather out of date scsi.device. Then again I use the
warpdrive.device and I don't know if it has the same problem.
Did you download "GIGA.LHA"? The description say: "4GB+ device for large
HDs". You may have to DL a PD formatting program since the HD toolbox may have
the same limitations.

Giga.lha? Not yet, though I will. The problem I have is that I already
digitized about 2 gigs worth of stuff–I *really* don't want to dump a whole
day's work.
I don't think it's just scsi.device, though, since I'm using warpdrive.device
too.

Interestingly enough, giga's docs say that the OS can actually handle a 4gig
drive–just nothing bigger since it's addressed with a 32bit number–but that
some old-fashioned software, apparently including movieshop, is still hardcoded
to expect the older 2gig Amiga OS limit. 🙁

Well let me know how you make out with Giga. Also don't be afraid to call
NoahJI's tech support number. They are VERY helpful and friendly, and may have
their own solution.

Well, I talked to Sherwood today, and he had no solution other than to reformat
my drive with smaller partitions. 🙁 Giga looks like it won't help since
Movieshop is the software with the problem–the OS, according to giga's
docs–can handle 4gig drives, but some older software still assumes the old
2gig (signed long as opposed to unsigned long) limit. So until Macrosystem
Germany gets their act together, we're SOL, and all my work of the week is down
the tubes. At least I caught it this early.

Well at least Macrosystem Germany is actively working on Movieshop. Since they
are developing solutions that will allow higher data rates they will have to
address this problem.

No way to backup before reformatting? Maybe you could beg, borrow, or rent a
tape drive, or even another 2gig HD for a day or two. I'd loan you mine but
I've got a project on it now and am still waiting for Iomega's Jazz drive.
Maybe you could call Hank. He might let you bring your system up to his place
and hook up another drive long enough to save off your scenes, reformat, and
then load em back on again.
BTW Anyone out there heard any news on the Jazz? It was due out soon and would
solve Paul's – and MY future video backup needs.

Well, that's the thing–I'd filled up half the drive with 3/5ths of the stuff I
needed to digitize. So I need to redigitize everything at about 70% instead of
75%, and it'll be a tighter fit too.
Btw, Sherwood did have some good news. A version of Diavolo (I'm not sure
whether it's already released yet) will work *directly* with Movieshop, so that
you can just say "back up such-and-such scenes" and it'll go ahead and do it!
I can't wait to get the upgrade.

Do you or anyone else have an email a for the Diavolo people? I am one of
those who registered at the full price before it was cut way down and was
promissed a free upgrade to the next version. That's the one I want!

FWIW, I saw a new version of MovieShop 2 nite's ago on Aminet. I have no idea
if it fixs the 2gig to 4gig?

I missed the beginning of this thread so I don't know what problem you are
fighting with. If you are wondering whether VLAB-M can handle 4Gb partitions,
I can assure that my system is running just fine using one as a video
partition. Only problem I've noted is I can no longer get any information about
the video side of things from the project info requestor. I don't consider this
a major problem since the video partition "gas guage" in the status window
looks like it knows what's going on <grin>! Of course if you are wondering
whether the VLAB-M can support larger than 4Gb partitions, then I think you've
got a problem — one that I've been discussing with Eric at NoahJi's about
several times now. If MacroSystems writes their own filesystem for their video
and audio partions, then they can change the partition limitation within their
filesystem (just as Newtek had to do with the FLYER). Of course, as soon as
they do that we will be complaining that we can't access those files through
AmigaDOS <grin>!

Yah, you're right about my problem, but you sound better off than I am. <G> My
status guage made everything look ducky too–it clearly recognized that I'd
only filled half the video drive. However, like yours, my Project Info
requester gave me garbage info for the video partition.
However, apparently unlike yours, my Movieshop coughed once I'd digitized about
2gigs worth of video data–it said "Error Recording Frames" why?
"vmotion.library internal error #2" or something very similar.
Sherwood told me that I was treading on very dangerous territory, and that I
could very well wind up with checksum errors and worse that would corrupt all
my data if I didn't change things to have a 2gig partition.
So I dumped everything, repartitioned, and now I'm redigitizing at a lower
quality level.
Supposedly AmigaDOS can at this point handle 4gig drives, but some software,
unfortunately including Movieshop, doesn't yet recognize that. All I can say
is, it's lucky I didn't get a *9* gig drive.
