#gif files

How do I use GIF files. I downloaded one and now I don't know how it becomes
useable on my Amiga 1200.
download the zgif datatype decompress with lha move the gif.datatype icon to
devs:datatypes,move the classes/datatypes/gif.datatype to your
sys:classes/datatypes
Joan,
If you are using 3.1, you can get a GIF datatype for your system and view them
that way.
If you have any other OS, get a viewer – ViewTek is good, as is SuperView but I
think the latest Superview requires 3.1. I haven't installed it, so I'm not
sure. Either of these can view GIF files. There are other GIF viewers in the
Graphic Utilities library of AmigaArts. You might do a search on the keyword
GIF to find them.

Betty,
PMFJI But, could you tell me _where_ one might find the GIF datatype for my
A1200 running 3.0?
Also can you or anyone else think of any other datatypes that might be useful
to A1200 users? (That were not included w/ ver 3.0 cirica '93?)
Thanks!! 🙂

oh let's see
….info,fonts,c,executable,zgif,jfif,macpaint,bitmap,ico,sun,targa,qrt,binary,
av,voc, aiff, xbitmap, sun au,reko, are the datatypes i have on my 1200….it's
overkill but with these datatypes i can have programs like viewtek/amosaic view
any kind of ifle from the internet, especially combined with the netpbm
package, from the internet or order from a pd catalog
Lepido,
Thanks for all the sugestions. Can all these datatypes be found in the Amiga
Forums? (or do i need to look elseware?)

I found this in AmigaUser forum, Library 11:
[100014,674] Steve Goddard Lib:10 GIF_DT.LZH
Bin, Bytes: 4485
Title : GIF Datatype.
Keywords: GIF DATATYPE WB3
For WB3 users only, this allows GIF files to be read in and used by any
datatype-aware program. GIFs can be displayed by MultiView and used as
WB/screen backdrops.
That one should do it.

Betty,
Thanks for the info, I'll grab that one tonight!
Do you know if I'll need to make any assigns when I install this datatype? (or
will MuliView find it in the Workbench:Devs/Datatypes drawer?)

you need to have an assign to the classes added to libs: but that should be in
your startup-sequence
Todd,
PMFJI
=>Do you know if I'll need to make any assigns when I install this datatype?
No, as this is handled automatically by the system Startup-Sequence at boot.
Anything in the DEVS: drawer is assigned (Monitor, Datatypes, DOSDrivers, etc).
When you add something new, to activate it you can do one of two things:
1. Reboot your machine so that the driver, datatype etc is activated alomg with
the rest, or
2. Double click on the new icon to load it into memory (and your system). Next
time you boot your machine it will be loaded automatically as long as it is in
the drawer.
=>or will MuliView find it in the Workbench:Devs/Datatypes drawer?
Multiview will find it as long as you have done one of the above methods. As
to a viewer program, I could suggest Viewtek. Excellent viewer which handles
more formats than just GIFs etc.

There's one called ZGIFDT.LHA in Amiga Arts library 14 (Graphics utilites).
If you search the libraries using the keyword TYPE you'll get a pretty good
listing of all the datatypes currently available for downloading. There are
quite a few of them! <g>

Asha,
Thamks! I'll look for this tonight. Would this be redundant with the one Betty
suggested? Do you know if one better than another?
..Now if I could only figure out how to get that "weather" script to work, but
thats a another topic altogether!
😉

I really wouldn't know, as I don't use viewers to look at the few GIFs I
have (load 'em into either OpalPaint or Photogenics). You might want to try
both of them and see for yourself…:)

Asha
Asha,
Thanks for the help. I use ImageFX to view most GIFs etc. My reason for
wanting a GIF Datatype is so that _if_ and when I get AMosaic (and all the
related files) all zipping along together, I wanted to be able to view the
"in-line" images on the home pages. (I know, it well be slow, humor me 😉
I am under the impression that a GIF Datatype w/ MultiView would do the trick
on my A1200.
Don't hesitate to let me know if I'm wrong! I seem to be wrong alot/ 🙂

I've got a GIF datatype installed here (A2000/040 OS 3.1) and it works just
fine with multiview. I wouldn't think you would have any problems. If you do,
just give a yell and someone will surely help you! 🙂

the others dont understand how to install datatypes correctly and that the
classes directory needs to be assigned and added to the libs directory which is
normally done at startup
Asha,
Thanks for all the help (you too Trent :-), I've downloaded ZGIF and installed
it to my Datatypes drawer.
Works like a charm!
I use NewIcons, which gives all Giff files its own exacutable icon, so when I
click on the icon, it starts Multiview, loads the image, and presto!
The image quality isn't as good as when I load the image into ImageFX, but its
fast, and quite acceptable for quick viewing of images.

what do you mean…they're still gif files…they look as good on anysytem
with the same screenmode
Lepido,
What I _mean_ is; when I load an image w/ the MultiView zgiff datatype, it is
not a sharp & clear as when rendered in the same resolution w/ ImageFX.
_I_ don't know why, I just use the software.
Go figure. 😉

By script I assume you mean an Arexx script? To utilize any Arexx script you
have to activate the RexxMast program. You will find it in your WB:System
drawer. Just double click and a box will open telling you that Arexx has been
loaded and then restart (you have to restart it, not multitask to it) whatever
program you use to communicate with. You will be able to use the Arexx script
now (most of the scripts here are designed to be used with Autopilot tho
unless it has been said otherwise in the program description).

that's not where i found it on my computer I found it first in rexxc directory
om ny system partition, later i moved it to c:
Trent,
I have been running Rexxmast in my strart-up drawer (I remember reading
somthing about doing this in the AP docs)
I've Downloaded a couple of Arexx scripts from the Autopilot section of the
AmigaVendors Forum for getting the daily weather maps and forcasts, but when I
attempt to rum them, AP logs on to the Weather Forum, but never downloads
anything, it just sits there untill I manualy exit out of the system.
Thanks for trying to help, though!

Download the gif file that starts with a Z (zgif). It's much faster than the
older gif datatype.
John,
I think you may have mis-directed this message.
(I have the ZGif datatype) 😉

with superview 4.53? it requies a minimum of 3.0 or 2.1 and library version
10.2 latest is 11.6 and can now use the netpbm package
