Field Rendering

TO: 76046,1756 Blaq-
I've done a couple of jobs that HAD to go to field rendering (the hard
way- twice the render time & AREXX "re-interlacing") because of the motion
design. If you have seen any 30 FPS animation with horizontal motion where the
left-to-right travel time is about 2-4 seconds, you'll notice some really
obvious "strobing" around the left and/or right of the moving object. At 60
FieldsPS, the motion is completely smooth. And from what I've seen in some
comparisons I've done, field rendering will make any animation look crisper and
have more depth. That's why IMAX films run at 60 FPS (at least I think they
do.) When 3.0 comes out, try it, you'll like it. It's much more than a
"subliminal" improvement.
BTW, Rick is right: play a field-rendered animation at half-speed, and
you'll be seeing 30 unique images per second, as opposed to 15 images each
shown twice. The resolution in either case would be the same- an NTSC field
will always have the same # of scanlines– it's the law!
And re: the clients– I would suggest giving them a low res test (I do
loRes scanline at 10 Frames per sec.) to have them 'sign off' on. If they
still need 3 versions, well, do what you have to keep them happy, I guess.
