I have been having some problems with importing solids from ACAD R13 and at the
suggestion of Brian Rudolph I requested the C1 update from my dealer. I was
told by my dealer that ADESK would ship FedEx that same day. 11 days later,
after many additional long distance calls VOILA!! I received TWO copies of C2.
I duly telephoned for my authorization number and afterward tried to install
the software. After switching to my correct floppy drive I type INSTALL, the
light on my drive goes on for 10-15 seconds, goes off the screen goes blank
except for the blinking cursor and nothing happens. I assumed I could install
the update and it would just write over my original program. Is this not true?
Do you have any idea why I cannot install this? I'm obviously very frustrated
and irritable over this…I am getting further behind by the hour on a project
that is already several days late. Please let me have your thoughts!

PS… I tried the No. 1 disk of the second set with the same results.

Yes, you should be able to install the new version right on top of your
original.
My only thougt is that something in your configuration might be conflicting
with the installation program. I would try stripping the system so that your
CONFIG.SYS only contains the lines FILES=40 and BUFFERS=30 and you rename the
AUTOEXEC.BAT so that it is not used in the boot up. Then reboot the computer
and try running the install program in this "clean" environment. It should work
with no problems.
If the install program doesn't run in this "clean" environment, then we have a
deeper problem, which extends to the hardware. Let us know whether this works.
Of course, once installed, you should be able to restore your original
configuration and be back up and running.

Well, I guess I have a hardware problem. I followed your instructions and had
the same negative results.
From the C:\ drive after typing in B: (my 3.5 floppy drive) there is quite a
long pause before the drive is recognized. I don't know if that is
significant.
I am able to read from, copy to and from the B: drive. Do you have any
suggestions before I lug this to my friendly repair guy?
Do you think it is worth my while to swap out the 3.5 drive or should I just go
for the service?

The answer to your questions depends on your answer to mine.
In this stripped environment, does the really slow access to drive B happen
only with the Autodesk diskettes, or with any diskettes?
If this only occurs with Autodesk disks, then those are most likely the
problem. Perhaps they were damaged before they got to you.
If trying to access or run _any_ program from the floppy get you this behavior,
then something is amis with the hardware most likely. Don't immediately assume
the problem is the disk drive, though, as the disk controller card could be
flaking out too.

Unfortunately your last premise was the correct one…replacing the motherboard
as we speak!
