#os2 background render
4 messages in this thread
Thank you for the tip Mr. Minton. Now rendering fine in the background and I
seem to have shaken some annoying pin pricks of white accross the screen which
were a nuisance.
Another question: Is it possible to run 2 sessions of 3ds4 at the same time
under Warp? i.e. Opening a 2nd window? When I try this I get an error message
about the com port already in use. Do I need 2 hardware locks on seperate
ports for this? Or what exactly?

Glad you got it working.
You can run 2 copies of 3ds at the same time under os/2, but it doesn't work
too well. You need to keep the idle sensitivity of the background session way
up, or else it will stall in "transforming objects".
You need to tell os/2 to share the lpt port. I only faintly remember how to do
this. If you can't figure it out, drop me another message and hopefully I'll
be at work so I can give you the exact commands. Anyhow, do a right click on
your printer object, find the drivers setting pages, and on one of the pages
there is a button for sharing the port. See, perfectly clear <g>. Enjoy.

Happily rendering in the background now, but….new problem, when rendering
during "transforming objects" the gas guage "sticks" or hangs about 3/4 the way
along. I need to jostle the mouse to unfreeze it and complete the render.
Does this have to do with the idle sensitivity setting you were mentioning?
After a brief look through the printer icon settings I can't seem to find
anything about sharing LPT1. If you know where it is I'ld appreciate finding
out.
Thanks again. Regards, Peter Landeck
I figured you would be back <g>.
On the "sticking" on transforming objects – 3ds is doing heavy polling of the
keyboard during this phase. OS/2 sees this as the program not doing anything
useful, and reduces the priority of the task. To get around this, you need to
go into dos settings and increase your idle sensitivity. This will prevent 3ds
from going to sleep. Unfortunately, it makes your foreground task go a lot
slower, even when the background session isn't rendering.
On sharing the dongle – right click on your printer icon, select settings,
select the output tab, right click on lpt1, select settings, turn on "share
access". No problem <g>.
