Hi,
What's the deal with the PD EGS libraries? It sounds like I don't need a
Spectrum board installed to get the EGS graphics? Do I need a mulit-sync
monitor? Is there software that will support the EGS graphics if I have the
libs installed, etc?
Please tell me more about this software and what it's uses might be.

The Public Domain EGS libraries allow EGS to run on any Amiga without a
graphics card, but you are severely limited in resolution and color. The
maximum is 640×400, 16 colors, which is a FAR CRY from 24-bit.
There was some debate about whether to release a PD EGS in the first place, but
a lot of people didn't fully understand it, and giving them something they can
run often helps clear up some confusion.
Words of caution though:
1. The PD libraries are not all that fast
2. The PD libraries don't support any resolutions other than the ones that come
with an Amiga
3. The PD libraries don't support any color depths other than the ones that
come with an Amiga.
In other words, these libraries don't do anything for you other than let you
run EGS software in a small screen with only 16 colors. BUT, they do let you
experience what EGS is like and you can determine from there if you want to go
all the way and get an EGS-28/24 SPECTRUM for some real advantages.
As far as, do you need a MultiSync monitor? Only if you need one without
EGS… The PD libraries don't add any new capabilities to your system other
than software.

Sorry, but no. Great lengths were taken to insure that they ONLY ran on the
native Amiga chipset. Since VIONA Development put many 'man-years' into the
development of this graphics OS, they are licensing it to various board
manufacturers. Hacking it to run on a graphics board that is not officially
licensed to run it is a direct violation of the law. To prevent anyone from
accidentally breaking the law, the software has been 'maimed' to prevent it
from running on anything other than native Amigas…
