I have a problem with my PAR, I need to do the follwing: I have to put a simplified architectural plan onto Betacam SP for Television. The image is a PAR still, image. I get a lot of flicker on the Horizontal Lines, which bothers me and might not suffice for me to get the job to produce 20 more of those still plans for TV series on housing. I tried thickening Lines, changing some colors but still I get Flickering, color changes helped a bit, but what is the best way to get such a 2D Line Drawing with filled surfaces to BetacamSP, with nearly no Flicker. I only have a Targa+32 and a PAR to do it, and both seem to have the same problem???? BTW I am in the PAL world meaning 25 Frames/sec. Any advice Welcome as soon as you can Christophe Van Oyen

Don't worry, you are not having this problem due to being in the PAL format. Your problem stems from the interlaced scanned TV that is displaying the hard edged horizontal lines in your graphics. When the very edge of the horizontal line goes from a dark (usually black) line to the light (usually white background) the edge of this line can't decide whether to jump to the odd or even field. To prove this to yourself just select the odd or even field display with your PAR output. This in itself may be the solution you need to display your stills, ie. use field odd or even display rather than frame display. If this doesn't work, I have had some success using blur in photoshop to create a gradient edge to horizontal lines in a sharp graphic such as those created with corel draw. This will degrade the sharpness of the image but it may be necessary to get around the old plucked guitar string look to those lines. Just remember it is usually not the thickness of those lines but the sharpness of the edge of the line and it's placement in reference to the location of the odd or even field scan line that causes this problem.

Christophe, In addition to the great reply from Don, you might want to experiment with 3D Studios own VBLUR IPAS. There is little documented about it and is often forgetten about. Start your experimenting with about 1/2 of it's default setting. VBLUR averages 3 scan lines at a time to help deal with NTSC interlace flicker. Note that it also softens the image so keep it as low as you can get away with. Good Luck, Ralph

Last time VBLUR came in handy was on a video project for Kenworth Trucking Co. I had to use a scan from their technical type brochure (lots of thin dark horizontal lines) on a 2D card in a field rendered animation. It flickered badly. So, I just rendered the scan as a background with slight VBLUR and saved that image to be used as the texture map. No more flicker. Good to know this little IPAS… it's strength and it weakness. Ralph

try a one to one blur, i use dgs3.3 video utilities for this. only thing worth a shit in the package. what it does is blur one pixel to the right and one pixel down, gets rid of all the flicker. maybe there is something out there that does the same thing. or i can send you the utility. since dgs is belly up anyway. sherwood animations
