#Buying an Amiga

I am in the process of finding equipment for video production (titling,
animation) for use on Honolulu public access cable. First: Is the 500 worth
the bother? What limitations do I buy when I buy the 500? Second: I have a
Panasonic PV-8500 VCR and camera set up. Shouldn't I be able to put RGB
into the camera connector and come out with a composite signal?

(I am currently telling you this from a Zenith AT machine and am very
envious of people who can de-arc Amiga files.)
The 500's limitations are: power supply will run it, additional ram, and not
much else. Everything you add on later will have to be externally powered.
Expansion, except certain plug ins, is not as easy. It lacks the video and
processor slot found on it's big brother, the 2000. It will not accept the
Bridge card.
If you intend it as a 'dedicated' unit, and don't need or want the
expansion capablities of the 2000, then it is a great bargain. The 500 and
2000 are almost identical, excepting that the 2000 allows easy and more
extensive expansion than the 500, and comes with an additional 512K of ram
stock. (and there _are_ workarounds for that. Speak to Mike Berro,
MicroIllusions, or Stan Kalisher, Syndesis, over in AmigaVendor. Mike is a
video consultant, and very knowlegable about the subject, while Stan is
doing some wondrous stuff in the graphics field, and is using some of the
big ticket stuff in his work. Also, ASDG is coming out with some highend
hardware that you might be interested in. Contact them, same place, for
details.)
