Hard Drivin' is the culmination of a 3-year research project on
simulation technology and feedback control devices. The hardware is a
nightmare of stuff including a couple of DSP chips, TWO 34010 graphics
chips, a 68010 to coordinate it all, oodles of memory, a couple of custom
chips with glue logic and a graphics accelerator to work with the 34010. I
won't claim it's elegant, but it got the job done, and it's a kick to
drive! I can usually complete about 5 or 6 laps (the stunt track is
quicker when you know how), but I got to learn without plugging in $$$.
Gotta learn to cut the right corners in the right way to keep your lap
times low. I think my best score is about 300k (about 10 laps), but I
don't know if the machine was set up the same as they are in the arcades.
