#Where's Basic?

Did I get an incomplete system with my A3000 or did Commodore forget
AmigaBasic?
I know, I know… BASIC is too old and slow, but it is still nice to teach
others on and to write small programs. I spent $300 on Lattice C and I
await AmigaVision. What's up with Basic?

AmigaBASIC currently is not shipping with the A3000….mainly
because it doesn't work on the A3000.

Ron,
The only thing I've seen that is official is that they're aware of
the problem and that a new version may possibly be available at some time
in the future.
Unofficially:
I don't know who "owns" the source code to MicroSoft BASIC for the
Amiga (better known as AmigaBASIC) so I don't know where the responsibility
for the fix is located.
I also know that Commodore is aware of a fix for the BASIC, but
again, don't know if they are permitted to modify the code (source or a
patch to the binary).

Microsoft (in all their wisdom, etc.) did not make AmigaBasic to be
compatible with any of the 680×0 chips that use the upper 8 bits of the
address. Therefore, AmigaBASIC cannot work on the 68020/30 chips, and
would be useless in the 3000, which has no 68000 chip to fall back on. I'm
told that they are working on an update, but no announcement has been made.
I've not tried HiSoft BASIC on the 3000, and only gave it minimal use on
the 2500/030, but it has given me no problems when I have tried it.
I was told that Commodore is thinking seriously of NOT offering BASIC with
the future Amigas. It seems that their marketing department thinks no one
is interested in having BASIC there. Those of us who like having it really
need to get in touch with their marketing department and give them some
good reasons for continuing to supply it.
