#Need Modem Help!

Hello! I am having some trouble with my Courier 14.4k HST. I think I have
the right settings set, but I can't understand why I am still getting a cps
of 580!! And it takes me 16 minutes to dload a 500k file at 19200!!! Can
anyone help me? I ran ANIMODEM and did what it told me to do to the letter.
Please help a novice if you can….

I left you a reply in AmigaTech, but I just noticed the 'novice' part.
You are going to have to run your terminal program and issue a few commands
to the modem to find out what, if anything is going on. Mainly, you need
to do an "ATI4" (no quotes) (all the modem commands start AT). That should
give you a full screenful of information. You should see a string of stuff
like &A1, &H2, or whatever. What your looking for is &B1, which fixes your
transfer rate between the computer and the modem, &N0 (Negotiate highest
link rate with remote modem), and &H1 (Hardware transmit control, this is
not important, but nice).
Ok, if any of those aren't set, you can set them by preceding the
parameter with AT and following it with &W (to write that parameter to the
nonvolatile ram in inside the modem), for instace "AT&B1&W" (no quotes).
Another possibility is that you have your preferences serial port speed
set for only 9600 or less. You should have it set for 19,200 or 38,400 if
your modem can handle it (mine can't).
The last possibility, if none of this works is that you have noisy phone
lines between your modem and the modem on the other end. The VHST works by
splitting the phone line up into frequency bands and if one band is too
noisy, it will drop to a lower rate, perhaps for all of them. Sometimes
calling again will get you a better phone connection, mostly not.
Anyway, these are how I have mine set up and I'm getting over 1K per
second connected with our 9600 baud BBS here.

Thanks for all of your help. I still can not get things working. I am now
calling bbs's and getting a cps of about 920 at 9600. But when ever I log
in at 19200, I can log in, but when I try to type something I get '"''''
and spanish characters (those squilgy lines), and I can on ly type again
when I switch back to 9600. why is this happening? I tried entering your
strings, Forgot to do the &N0 one, so I will try that. What are your
settings in the back of your HST? What program do you use? I am using
JRComm. Please help me if you can.

I'm have all the dip switches down, since I don't use AutoAnswer,
preferences set to RTS/CTS, 19200 baud, Full duplex, 8 bits, no parity, and
1 stop bit. Here are my HST settings (used ATI4 to display): USRobotics

One problem you might be running into is systems that are set up to run
at 19,200 but the serial ports are only passing 9600. I've run into that
before. Also, make sure the system you are calling is 19.2K capable. Hope
