I'M IN A PANIC!!!
I have an A2000 with an 80 meg hard drive and a SyQuest removable
media drive. I just finished doing a lot of heavy file movement from the
SyQuest to the 80 megger. I threw all the files I wanted to delete in the
Trashcan but when I went to Empty Trash I got a disk error. I used
DiskMaster to display the contents of the Trashcan but could not delete
anything. I turned off the machine and repowered to get a message:
Error validating disk
Key 46753 already set
I cancelled the message and the icons pop up. I can open the
SyQuest drive icon (dh1:) but the window "gas gauge" reads empty. All the
windows open and I can display all the pictures in the SyQuest. When I try
to empty the Trash again I get a message:
Volume
df1
is not validated
Is there SOME way of forcing a validation through the CLI? Although
I've used the Amiga for some years I am mainly self taught and I've never
run across a problem like this. Could some one PLEASE help?!!! Thank you.
(P.S. I have another SyQuest disk that mounts just fine.)

If you're familiar enough with the AmigaDos root sector layout, you
can force a drive to show as valid by setting the 'valid bitmap' flag.
However, if you don't know what you're doing…you can mess things up
worse.
However, the real problem is 2 files claiming the same sector,
thats the key number error.
You'd have to find that file and delete it…but that requires the
valid bitmap flag be set.
You can do one of two things:
Even with the validation error…the files are still readable, so
simply make a backup of everything except TRASH. Then reformat the drive
using the QUICK option (only takes a few seconds) and then restore the
files.
Reformat as above, and then start over again copying files from the
SyQuest.

As you might've guessed I know nothing of the valid bitmap flag so I
guess I'd ball things up pretty good! I was hoping to correct this problem
without going the backup route but I think I have no choice. Could I ask
about the format command? I think I know what to do but I could use
conformation. The proper form would be:
1.SYS:> format DISK dh1: NAME dh1: QUICK FFS
Would this be the proper formatting command? Thanks.

The correct command would be:
FORMAT DRIVE DH1: NAME <anything> QUICK FFS
in place of <anything> put what you'd like the volumn name, do NOT
use a colon in the name! For example, if you wanted to call it "fh1" then
the substitue would be:
format drive dh1: name fh1 quick ffs
Or if you want to call it "george" the command would be:
format drive dh1: name george quick ffs
That way, you can access the drive as:
dir dh1:
or
dir fh1: (or george: or whatever)

Makes perfect sense. I want my platter to be named "dh1" at least
for now. Could you tell me what the CLI command would be for renaming my
SyQuest platter? Would a simple "RENAME" from the workbench do the trick?
This will be the first time I have ever tried to restore anything with
Quarterback. Wish me luck!
Hi Leslie, First DON"T PANIC!!! Turn on the machine with the SYQUEST bad
disk in it. Let it come up to your normal screen, which will take more
time then normal. Then go take a walk. 44 megs will take a while to
validate, which the Amiga will do for you. After a long while you will get
the disk gauge and access to the disk back. I have had this done to me a
couple of times, normally what happens is the machine is turned off while a
disk WRITE is going on.

I had a different problem. There was no disk write going on when I last
shut off my machine. I backed up everything and, did a quick directory
format, and restored the whole thing.
Michael, I've had the dreaded already validated error come up and the Amiga
has never fixed it for me. I've always ended up backing up formatting quick
and restoring the partition/hard drive. Are you absolutely sure that it
will fix a validation error itself?
