#Mimic Fishhook Lens

Can anyone tell me a little about setting up a "fishhook" lens effect
in Lightwave?
I've modeled a room, and am trying to pan from a shot of one side,
zooming out yet keeping the far left of the screen showing the
origional location. The problem is that way too much of the floor
and cieling area show up at the end. The client says that a
"Fishhook" lens is used to get away from it.
Fisheye I know, but can anyone help me out on this? Either how one
works, or even how to do it?
Fisheye Lens Nate not Fishhook Lens. A Fisheye Lense will have the
Room look rather BIZARRE as a fisheye Lense Distorts things sorta
Like the refelction of something in a Bubble.
Yeah, that's what I thought it was called, but the client is always
right, you know. Actually, I thought a fisheye was just a super wide
angle lens but still having the same aspect angle. Hmm. Anyway,
maybe I can render them at some wierd res and scale in ADPro or
something, to stretch the image enough to get away with it. -sigh-

You may be able to animate a lens setting in LW to get a fisheye
effect, which appears the same as wrapping the image on a sphere or
ellipse. As a cheat, maybe you could render the anim, then re-render
it front projection mapped onto a sphere of appropriate hugeness. I
think adpro, IM, or imagefx have warping effects which could also do
a fisheye on an animation.

Duooh! of course not… silly me… it'll have to be mapped
spherically… or maybe a subdivided plane with a bone in the middle

Interesting idea. Save the IFF's and load them as an image sequence
to be reflection mapped (not front projection) on a convex shape.
Make sure the camera is very close to the convex object. Also, make
the object fairly dense to ensure that all of the curves are smooth.
I betcha that would do it.
A message to myself! That won't work, dummy. Everything would be
backwards from right to left!
Can't you just flop the image map using ADPro ? I'm kinda intrigued by the
possibility of doing a fisheye lense type effect using LW.

I'm sure that could be done. I am not sure exactly how the rest is
done. I tend to think that the reflection map is the key but the
unknown variables are the exact shape of the convex surface and the
correct distance from lens to object.

I've been following this one with my typical wandering eye. Correct
me if I'm wrong, but a reflection map basically maps the image 360
degrees on the inside of a giant sphere around your object which is
then reflected off the object.
You would have to render a much larger picture of the object or you
would lose 50% of your image… Losing myself here… <g>

You could place the image you want to reflect in the middle of a larger
image and try to get it right so only the requested image reflects…
Also, off of Aki's suggestion about placing a bone in the middle of a
subdivided plane, you could morph a subdivided plane into a slightly
spherized (macro) plane… The image map would go along for the ride…

Or, render the scene with a shorter focal length lens to concentrate
the important image area into the center.

I experimented a little with a fisheye lense type of effect the other day.
I just set up a scene, then used a sphere to reflect the scene using
raytracing turned on. I took a while to get the camera set right but it
came out pretty cool. Im sure it will be even better when the scene is
animated.
Your right, to reflect an image off the sphere it has to be VERY large to
cover the sphere. Also very close.
Sometime I'm gonna try an image sequence. First render the scene
normally, then render it on the sphere for the fisheye effect.
Why not try making a Fisheye Lens for the Camera to Shoot Thru????

Are you still using Imagine or are you using LW? either way you should
be able to muck about a bit and get the Renderer to do the Fisheye
effect. I dunno what effect this will have on rendering times tho.
I'm not familiar with LW, but I just made a fish-eye lense in Imagine
3.0…the effect is wicked! If you have control over the FOV (Field
of View) in LW you should be able to accomplish it.
Are you sure you're not looking for a fishear or fishfin lens effect?
I think you mean fisheye! Fisheye lenses are not rectalinear, ie.,
they are optically different than the way LW figures optics. They
have a designed distortion that gives the round field of view instead
of rectangular. There probably is a way to get LW to do this but I
think it would be very slow (using trace refractions)

OK, OK, it's a fisheye! I think I knew that from my photography days, but the
client is always right, right?
Anyway, what he wanted was just a pan out to a super wide angle,
almost like what a zooming fisheye would yield. The object starting
on the left edge of the screen would end up still on the left edge.
We were getting too much of the top and floor of the set. I made all
the backdrop pieces a little taller and changed the angle/height of
the camera. It'll all be rendering soon on somebodies Raptor.
Sure glad this came out to be such a good thread, 'tho.
I did try a magnifying glass moving over a logo once, and it came out pretty
good. I think I made both the upper AND lower surfaces two sided to get the
look to come out right. Probably could've just faced them both up.
Thanks to everyone for all of the ideas. Now I know what'll occupy
all my spare time once this one is done…
Nope its a Fiske Bahl Lense so there hehehe
