Does anybody know about a good training manual to be used for a 3DS R3 training course? I am organizing a formal 3DS R3 course in San Juan, PR and I need to find a good manual to use, maybe with an exercise disk included. There are a lot of AutoCAD training manuals out there, but I have not seen a 3DS one yet. And, by the way, anybody out there interested in a 3DS architectural visualization course? Please let me know. Thanks, Rafael

Hi, Rafael. For a beginning class in 3DS, the Tutorials Guide that comes with the software is quite adequate. For a more advanced course, the book: Inside 3D Studio is excellent. Regards, Connie

Rafael: >> 3DS training manual Try "Inside 3D Studio" and "3D Studio Applied". Both come with a CD of images and meshes, and both work well in a training class. Greg (only slightly partial to the first one!) Pyros

Dear Mr. Marrero, I wrote a book called 3D Studio Applied which is designed for training classes (self training/ATC & Dealer Courses). It is a series of 11 tutorials, everything from forensic animation to architectural modeling and interior design. I also have an instructors guide (200 pages) that includes six more 'instructor only' exercises, and outlines 7 classes you can teach using the book and the exercises in the guide. You can contact Crista Zull at ADVANSTAR for more information about 3DS APPLIED and the 3D Studio Training & Marketing Guide. OK? N.

ADVANSTAR (att: Crista Zull) I recently acquired a copy of 3D Studio Applied. . . Good work guys! PLEASE send me more info on where I can get a hold of the instructor's guide and the "3D Studio Training & Marketing Guide" ASAP, as I will start teaching 3DS and courses real soon! Thanks! Rafael

For your training pleasure, you can also check out the 3D Studio Tips & Tricks Series, a set of six workbooks all done tutorial-style. The first three books, which have been out for about a year, have been revised for R3 and R4. There are also three new books called Materials & Lighting, Technical Tips and Animals & People. The new six-book set will be out within two weeks, published by Delmar Publishers 1-800-347-7707. The books will retail for $25 each (except Technical Tips, which is an epic tome at $30). The first three books have been used for a number of training curricula, and the three new ones are already slated for an advanced training course coming up next month. There are no teacher guides — all the info is in the books. Michele (a co-author)

Michele What exactly does the table of contents look like for Technical tips? I plan to get ANimals & People and MAterials and Lighting, but so far have not pre-ordered technical tips. Judy

Is this the same Judy of Log Cabin fame last year? Glad to see you've kept at it. Having fun yet? <G> Here is the TECHNICAL TIPS table of contents. I've included a few subheadings that might be of particular interest. 1. Basics and Terminology (what is 24-bit, etc.) pp5-14 2. Standards and Drivers, pp15-30 What is a standard? Why does the PC have them? What is a driver? Why does the PC have them and not the Mac? 3. Memory, pp31-45 What is memory? How to tell if 3DS is finding your memory What to do about it if it isn't 4. Maximizing 3DS, pp47-62 Explains all those little things you're supposed to do when you install 3DS but sometimes don't do, like adjusting Gamma. 5. Recording to Video, pp65-92 Explains all the video terminology: frames & fields, time code, synch, encoders, composite and component, etc. Goes over video recording methods, how they work. 6. Going Freelance, pp95-138 By popular demand, a guide to going freelance with graphics. A condensed version appears in the latest issue of 3D Artist. [continued]

Yes – tis I of the log Cabin fame :-(. I do feel that I have come a long way since then but alas I still have a long way to go :-(. I really do appreciate all the help I have gotten from folks on this forum! Judy

Why the 🙁 ? I'm happy you've stuck with it. Don't be embarassed about your questions. I defy *anyone* on this forum to say they have never asked a "beginner" question. Heck, I do it all the time — where do you think I get the material for my books? <g> Michele

7. Notekeeping, pp139-157 A guide to effective notekeeping for artists. 8. Network Rendering, pp158-176 Everything you ever wanted to know about the subject. This chapter was written by Autodesk Technical Support and Gregory Pyros. There is also a big glossary at the back defining all the technical terms used in the book, plus more. This book is the best seller of the bunch in Australia, where the books have been out for three months already. I will humbly add that they have received excellent reviews. In particular chapters 2 and 3 of the Tech Tips book have gotten raves. I was told that computer teachers at colleges were using the explanations of PC memory, standards and drivers for classes completely unrelated to 3D Studio, simply because they can't find plain english explanations of these topics anywhere else.
